Sloan Signes to Play Ball
Basketball

McPherson College has announced the recent signing of Brooke Sloan of Buffalo, Kan., and Buffalo-Altoona-Midway High School to a basketball letter of intent for the 2008-2009 school year.

A 5'7” guard, Sloan was a four-time All-Three Rivers League selection for coach Jim Papen. Brooke completed her prep basketball career with 1,136 points. She was named the Jets' captain and Most Valuable Player.

Sloan has been a four-year letter winner in volleyball and softball as well as basketball at Altoona-Midway.

“Brooke's biggest asset, thus far, has been her versatility,” said McPherson College women's head coach Shelly Prescott. “She can shoot the ball, defend the post, and handle the ball well. Brooke scored over 1,000 career points, which is a phenomenal accomplishment!”

Girard Heads To State
SoftballAnonymous writes "The Girard Trojans were awesome in the winning of a berth in the 4-A State Softball Tourney at Salina on May 23 and 24.  The beat Labette Community High School 7-1 in the Semi Final game. Columbus won over Independence in the other Semi Final 2-0.  In the Championship game the Trojans won 3-0.  The battery of Starr McLeod, pitcher, and Lisa Curran, catcher, has been a great combination to help lead the team to a 21-0 record for the year. They were great together with few mistakes being made all season.   Girard will be the only unbeaten team in the State meet.  Trojan fans look forward to great things from these young ladies at Salina.  All of the starting players are return players from the team that went to the State last year in Mulvane."

A High School Career Winding Down
Track and Field

In a couple weeks we will be saying good-bye to the senior athletes that we have watched since grade school.  We all have those special athletes who we will miss most.  Whether it be our kids, our neighbors, or a kid that for some reason you just become attached to after years of watching them compete.  For me personally I will be saying good-bye to Pleasanton's Megan Allen.  There are many reasons why I will miss seeing her compete.  It could be her trips to State Track where she has competed in at least three events per year since she was a freshman.  Maybe it's the School Records she set through-out high school.  It could be her toughness that she has shown.  One memory comes to mind when she was playing for me on our high school MAYB team.  Megan started playing as an 8th grader often competing against seniors.  One game in Wichita she hit the floor so hard that it knocked part of her braces off her teeth.  She stayed right in the game and never complained.  She is tough!  All these things are important to me but what I will probably miss most is just Megan.  The type of kid she is.  You can often find her helping out the younger athletes.  Many times while taking pictures I watched her work with the junior high kids on the track.  Yes, it will be a bitter-sweet good-bye in the next few weeks as our local "Stars" leave their high school careers behind.  But the memories will always be there.

The Total Track Athlete
Track and FieldThere are some great athletes in the SEK area.  One needs to look no farther than our track leaderboard to see our list of the best.  The leaders in the individual events have mastered their trade.  Whether it be high jump or discus, distance or sprints, the leaderboard doesn't lie.  Johnny Webb, a junior from Girard doesn't currently sit on top of any event.  So why would SEK-Sports consider him the "Total Track Athlete"?  Webb can do it all, as shown on the leaderboard.  His long jump mark of 20' has him at 16th.  In triple jump he is at 5th with a leap of 42'1".  Perhaps his specialty, the high jump, he has the third best jump at 6'6".  So you could say that he has the jumps down but what about running events? 8th in the 800M at 2:07.0, 9th in the 300IH at 41.92.  You have to imagine he could be listed in any event he chose to compete in.  If there was a high school decathalon, my money would be on Webb.

"One on One" with Southeast Sr., Nick Renfro
Track and Field After your run in the 300 IH at Parsons on Tuesday night you broke your own school record. Can you tell during a run if your on pace for a good time?

Well, the 300 IH hurdles are a weird race. It's hard to tell, but there are somedays when you just know. Like at Parsons, I kept my posture and had a strong finish and knew that I was close and it turned out that I did.

You are currently in a battle for the top spot on our leaderboard in both hurdle events and tenths of a second from the record. One might think you have been running hurdles for a long time but that's not the case. When did you start doing the hurdles and when did you realize that you were pretty good?

I first started running hurdles in jr. high and was pretty successful but in high school I started out playing baseball my first two years. The summer going in to my Jr. year I tore my rotator cuff and could no longer throw so I took up track. I figured I would try doing hurdles again and started out not so good, but then I began working on form and was shaving tenths of seconds off every meet and ended up running a pretty good time. I have worked hard this year with the help of my coaches and support from my team and I have been very successful so far.

You made it to state last year in both hurdle events. What did it feel like walking into the stadium with all those people in attendence?

Honestly, I was pretty nervous. There were thousands of people there and I knew that there were several very outstanding athletes in my events.

Give me a recap of how the State Meet went for you?

In the 110 M hurdles I was actually pretty happy. I was not able to set any personal records but I went in there as the number 8 guy and ended up getting 6th. In the 300 IH I was kind of dissapointed. Not only did I not make it to finals, I also ran the worst time I had ran all year. I have worked hard and now I am running better at every track meet.

Right now your times are 15.24 in the 110 and 40.78 in the 300. Do you think you are capable of shaving some time off of those? What things do you think you can improve on to help your time?

In both events I do believe I can do better. In the 110's I just need to have a complete race without hitting any hurdles and work on pawing my foot so I can take off faster after every hurdle. In the 300 IH I will be working on a stronger finish so I am not as tired on the last stretch. I will also work on keeping my form all they way through.

Tell me what your goals are for the remainder of the season?

My biggest goal is to have a new personal record everytime I run, even if it's only a tenth of a second. Other goals include doing well and competing at the KU relays and state. And working hard in practice to accomplish these goals.  Last but not least, encouraging and motivating my team, they all do the same for me.
