SEK-sports.com is in the process of making sweeping changes to our web site. In recent years, the site has been more of a public forum for fans of southeast Kansas high school athletics to chat. Although we will continue to have the forum as part of our site, you will see dramatic improvements in our coverage of all sports in southeast and south central Kansas.
Brian Thomas, who spent 22 years at the Independence Daily Reporter including the last 17 as sports editor, will be taking over the content of the site. In the process, we will be shifting to more of an online sports newspaper format for the region.
In all, the site will be covering 50 different high schools. Included will be five different leagues: Southeast Kansas (Chanute, Field Kindley, Fort Scott, Independence, Labette County, Parsons, Pittsburg); Tri-Valley (Burlington, Caney Valley, Cherryvale, Erie, Eureka, Fredonia, Humboldt, Neodesha, Yates Center); CNC (Baxter Sprin gs, Columbus, Frontenac, Galena, Girard, Pittsburg-St. Mary's Colgan, Riverton, Southeast-Cherokee); South Central Border (Argonia, Caldwell, Cedar Vale, Central-Burden, Dexter, Elk Valley, Flinthills, Oxford, Sedan, South Haven, Udall, West Elk); and Three Rivers (Altoona-Midway, Chetopa, Colony-Crest, Jayhawk-Linn, Marmaton Valley, Northeast-Arma, Oswego, Pleasanton, St. Paul, Uniontown). We will also include individual schools such as Anderson County, Iola, Leon-Bluestem and Prairie View.
We hope to be completely switched over into our new format by mid-August, just in time for the start of the fall sports season. Each school in the region will have its own "team" page, which will include details of each sport that it participates in. With the help of all coaches, we will post updated schedules, results, recaps and even statistics (boxscores) from each event. In addition, there will be team previews and capsules to detail each team before the start of their season.
Although we will focus on each school in a detailed format, there will also be other improved features as part of our new site. You will see features such as Athletes of the Week, Game (Event) of the Week and postseason honors in each sport by SEK-sports.com. Another feature will be focused on student-athletes in the region and the amazing things they do off the court/field. That may include student-athletes who are clasroom champions, involved in other school activities, active members of the community, or maybe involved in an interesting hobby, etc.
The changes to the site are not limited to just what we bring to the table. We are also going to feature stories and photos from students at each high school. By providing this opportunity, it will allow these students to gain valuable experience in writing and photography as they try to work their way into the journalism field.
We are excited about this new venture at SEK-sports.com. Southeast and south central Kansas athletics typically do not get as much recognition at the state level. We want to change that and shine a positive light on all the amazing teams and student-athletes this region has to offer.
The new school year is quickly approaching. In the meantime, SEK-sports.com is searching for sponsors from each community that we serve. This will help defray the cost of our expenses that will include traveling to schools and sporting events throughout the region. We have a wide range of sponsorship packages available for businesses and individuals wanting to jump on board this year.
If you have any questions about sponsorships and the site in general or want to make any suggestions on items we should cover, we would love to hear from you. Contact Brian Thomas by email at
