Returning players, a new head coach.
The 2019 Wellsville Eagles will be under the direction of Mike Berg, who is entering his 20th season as a varsity football head coach. Berg comes to Wellsville with an overall record of 108-80, or .574 winning percentage.
On the playing field, the Eagles will have back seven total players.
On the offensive side, they will have back skill players in senior running backs Chase Farley and Anthony Signs. Signs had 42 carries last year with 201 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Farley will step up in the starting role after only have 14 carries last year.
“Our leading rusher, passer, and receiver have been lost to graduation. These players will be difficult to replace.” Noted the first-year head coach.
During the summer, the Quarterback position was up for grabs and won by senior Luke Richards. The speedy Richards will transition from wide receiver to the signal called. He recorded 164 all-purpose yards with two touchdowns in the six games he appeared in last year.
Berg believes the front line will help the starting quarterback move to the new position. “One of our strengths will be returning 3 offensive linemen.”
Upfront Dawn Kleitz and Eddie Lopez will hold down the tackle spots joined by guard Dominic Oropeza.
New to the front line for the Eagles this year will be 6’3″, 275 lbs. junior Colby Stephens, who will double as an offensive guard and defensive tackle.
On the defensive side of the ball, Oropeza, Kleitz, Farley, Signs, and Richards all return long with linebacker Nick Graniewski.
“We should be able to rotate some players on the defensive side of the ball.” Said the Wellsville Head Coach.
“A bunch of new players are coming out that weren’t on the team last year. We should have good numbers to practice with.”
While the Eagles will face one of the more robust districts in Eastern Kansas, they will play three of the five games at home.
“We are in an extremely tough district. (Topeka) Hayden, Perry (LeCompton), (Santa Fe) Trail, and Jefferson Westt will (all) be very good.”
Wellsville will play Perry-LeCompton, KC Ward, and Jefferson West all at home in district play while traveling to Santa Fe trail and Topeka Hayden.
The non-district play has Wellsville on the road however with their lone non-district game is the season opener against Anderson County while traveling to Iola and Burlington.
