2A District #1
After the first week of district play there is plenty to talk about. Erie, Southeast Cherokee, and Humboldt started off with nice victories. Jayhawk – Linn, Northeast Arma, and Riverton have to regroup and try to make up some ground after losing their first district game.
Erie 2-2 will travel to 4-0 Humboldt after coming up with a big 44-19 win over Riverton. Humboldt will be having their homecoming festivities this Friday evening after traveling to Mound City with a walloping 73-0 win over Jayhawk Linn last week. Erie’s last win against the Cubs was back in 2015 in district play. Quarterback Jaden Gard was a freshman that year and made his first start in that 36-28 win. Humboldt has been just demolishing teams. Mostly putting games out of hand by end of first quarter. They have been using all facets of the game to their advantage. The offense and defense are very fast and strong. The Cubs have used their special teams to their advantage as well with punt returns for touchdowns and causing teams to fumble kickoff returns . I can only remember a few times this season where they have had to go more than 60 yards on a drive to score. The Red Devils will have to play a perfect game and come up with 3 or more turnovers to give themselves a chance at starting 2-0 in district play.
Jayhawk Linn2-2 will host Three Rivers League Foe Southeast Cherokee 3-1 . This is the first time since the 2015 season that the Jayhawks have lost two games in a row. I don’t think they have ever lost a game the way they did last Friday against Humboldt. Southeast Cherokee is off to its best season since 2012. Making the move to the Three Rivers League has been very friendly for them. This game should be a thriller. For the Jayhawks , they just need to get back on the winning side of things. They are a good football team that just ran into some very talented squads in the last two games. Quarterback Treyton Compton and running back/ wide receiver Hayden Broyles will have to start making big plays again if they want to get their first district win . Cherokee won 27-6 over Northeast Arma last Friday . Their only loss so far in 2018 came from 4-0 league opponent Pleasanton 8-0. The Lancers will have to play sound run defense as the Jayhawks run a flex bone offense. The defensive ends for Southeast will be key in this ballgame. I think Jayhawk Linn will find a way in this game to get back into the win column.
0-4 Riverton will travel to 0-4 Northeast Arma . One of these teams will finally get their first victory. Arma hasn’t won a football game since 2015. Riverton has only 5 wins since 2015. The Rams lost last week to Erie 44-19 and Arma lost to Southeast 27-6. Riverton should be to much up front for the undersized Arma team. The Rams run a lot of misdirection with power running backs. They aren’t the fastest backs but if given the hole to run through they are not easy to bring down. The Notheast Arma Vikings will have their hands full again this week.
