The Iola Mustangs traveled to Chanute to square off against the Blue Comets on Friday. Chanute headed into the game with a 30 game win streak against the Mustangs. After a 42-0 victory, that tradition stands.

Chanute was led by senior Briley Peavy, who continues his impressive season with 15 yards and a touchdown receiving, 42 yards and a touchdown rushing, and a punt returned for another touchdown.

“[Peavy] always [performs] he’s just an athlete and a player. So, if you get the ball in his hands he is going to make something special happen. I was proud of all of our guys and Briley was one of them as well. He’s just a playmaker, so if he gets his ball in his hands, watch out,” Chanute’s head coach, Clete Frazell said.

Trent Jones stood out for Iola. Jones had 111 rushing yards on 11 carries. This included a 67 yard run towards the end of the first half.

The Comets got the ball on the opening drive of the game but ended up punting. Chanute’s first score came on their second drive when peavy took the ball three yards into the endzone. Jacob Adams’s PAT was good and the Blue Comets led 7-0

Chanute quarterback Ty Bowman picked up Chanute’s second touchdown of the contest, connecting with peavy from ten yards out. With less than three minutes left in the first quarter, Adams tacked on another point to put the Comets up 14-0. Adams would finish the game 6/6 on PAT attempts.

A little over a minute later, Mustang quarterback Casen Barker threw a pass that would be caught by Chanute’s Curtis Harris. Harris ran it back into the endzone for his first pick-six of the season. Chanute now led 21-0.

With less than two minutes remaining until halftime Chanute started a drive at their own twenty yard-line. The Mustangs’ defense brought up a 4th & 10. Chanute was forced to bring Peavy on to punt. After the punt left Peavy’s foot an Iola defender made contact with Peavy.

The roughing the kicker call moved the ball up fifteen yards, handing the Comets a free 1st & 10 from their own 35 yard-line. Then on the next play, Bowman dropped back to pass, the throw was incomplete but it didn’t matter, because he was hit after the throw. Another fifteen yards were given to the Blue Comets. Now, from the fifty, Bowman took the ball himself and ran fifty yards, assisted by Jaden Costin’s fantastic block, to score yet another Blue Comet touchdown.

Iola got the ball at their own 31, now with less than a minute on the clock. They hand the ball to Jones, who speeds off and is tackled by Peavy on the Chanute two yard-line. Unfortunately for the Mustangs, this 67-yard pick up would be followed by two offensive penalties and a sack before time ran out. Chanute led 28-0 at the half.

The second half began with an Iola drive ending in a punt on 4th & 20. The Mustangs would regain possession quickly, as Bowman threw his only interception of the night to Karson Sigg.

Chanute’s next drive would start after Garrett Almond pulled off a fantastic sack, giving the Mustangs 4th & 20. The Blue Comets would see Peavy take off for a 39-yard run and an 11-yard touchdown run from Bowman.

Bowman ended the game passing 7/12 for 44 yards, with one touchdown, and one interception. He also ran for 81 yards and two touchdowns on four attempts.

“I felt pretty good coming in. I didn’t pass the ball as well as I wanted to, but my line did a great job and my wide receivers did a great job blocking for me so I could utilize the run a lot more, to make up for the passing,” Bowman said.

Iola’s next drive would end with yet another punt. This time Peavy fielded the ball and ran off for a Blue Comet touchdown. This would be Chanute’s final score of the game, putting the Comets up 42-0.
