YATES CENTER – Led by a 22-6 first-quarter lead as well as Junior Mark Bogner’s 18 points and Senior Matthew Vail’s 17 point performance, the Erie High School Boys Basketball team is headed to their first state basketball tournament appearance since 1993 with a 65-44 win in the Yates Center Championship match-up against Northeast-Arma.

“We got off to a great start and it was the result of tremendous defensive effort and rebounding,” said Erie Head Coach Nick Pfeifer. “From there I thought we did a nice job of continuing to attack on the offensive end while being very solid on defense.”

Erie came into the Yates Center tournament as the number one seed. They defeated Pittsburg-Colgan in the opening round by a 61-46 score. In the semi-finals they defeated Sub-State host Yates center 68-38 to put themselves in the Championship game.

After a 22-6 start, Erie outscored Northeast-Arma, who has not appeared in a boy’s basketball state tournament since 1974, 16-11 in the 2nd quarter and 12-11 in the 3rd quarter. With the game well out of reach, Arma outscored Erie in the 4th quarter 16-15.

Vail and Bogner both had 4 3-pointers apiece. Eric Dilinger added 13 points in the Championship game, joining Bogner and Vail in double figures.

Coach Pfeifer added, “I could not be more proud of the effort and commitment that everyone on our team has put forth long before this week and before the season.  I am so happy for our guys and privileged to work with not only this group but so many other great players and people who have helped build our program to a championship level.”
