DOUGLASS – The Cherryvale Chargers were on the road Friday night for their district game against Douglass and found themselves on the wrong end of a 44-8 decision.

The young Chargers defense struggled in the 2nd quarter giving up 24 points unanswered points.

“They have a great running back and [quarterback] that are quick.” Noted Cherryvale head coach Harry Hester.

Douglass ran 29 plays for a total of 366 yards, compared to Cherryvale’s 47 plays on offense with 247 yards. Coach Hester noted the Chargers struggles to convert on 3rd down plays as one of the issues for his team Friday night.

“Our failure to convert 3rd down was crucial.” The Chargers were 1/9 in third down plays.

Senior Cherryvale quarterback Cade Addis was 0/4 on the night passing and limited to 12 yards running. The lone bright spot for Cherryvale was Garrett Novotny who carried the ball 13 times for 110 yards. Zaine Lantz scored the only Cherryvale touchdown in the 4th quarter.

Cherryvale falls to 0-3 in district play and 2-4 overall. The Chargers will host Tri-Valley league foe Neodesha Friday night, who lost 36-22 against Eureka. The Bluestreaks are also winless in district. Douglass improved to 3-0 in the district with the Friday night win and will travel to Fredonia who is also 3-0 in the district with their win Friday night.
