FORT SCOTT — Chanute quarterback Ty Bowman threw four touchdown passes and ran for a fifth in leading the Blue Comets to a 42-21 victory over Fort Scott in Southeast Kansas League play at Frary Field Friday night.

Bowman completed 13 of 17 passes for 219 yards, seven of those going to Jake Peavy for 96 yards and a score, while also running for 151 yards on 23 carries.

The Blue Comets (2-0 SEK, 5-1 overall) took a 13-0 lead in the first quarter as Bowman connected with Jaden Costin for a 44-yard scoring pass with 7:24 on the clock and with Garrett Almond from 24 yards out with 2:14 to go.

The Tigers (1-3, 1-5) responded with two Connor Fess touchdown runs to gain the lead. A 6-yard run got Fort Scott on the board with 38 seconds remaining in the first while an 8-yard run went on the board with 7:52 to go in the second. Fess also kicked both extra points.

Bowman’s 38-yard scoring strike to Peavy with 1:12 left in the half and his subsequent 2-point conversion pass to Almond put the Blue Comets ahead, 21-14, with 1:12 left in the half.

Bowman’s 12-yard scoring run with 5:47 on the clock in the third extended the lead to 28-14. Andrew Reed brought Fort Scott within a score on a 4-yard run with four seconds to go.

Bowman’s fifth scoring pass came with 7:02 remaining in the contest as he connected with Costin from 10 yards out. Peavy capped the scoring with a 7-yard run with 1:25 left in the contest.

Chanute’s balanced attack produced 504 yards of total offense as the Comets gained 285 yards on the ground. Tyler Davis added 73 yards on 11 carries. Costin caught 3 passes for 75 yards.

Fort Scott produced 346 yards of total offense with 284 provided by its ground game. Fess gained 208 yards on 25 carries. Brody Bowles completed 8 of 14 passes for 62 yards. C.J. Horton caught 3 passes for 29 yards while Nick Emerson caught 3 for 22 yards.

Fort Scott has concluded SEK play and will finish the regular season on the road. The Tigers will play at Bolivar, Mo., Friday, Oct. 19 and at Eudora Oct. 26.

Chanute will host Coffeyville on Oct. 19 and finished the regular season at Labette County on Oct. 26 in a contest that will likely determine the SEK champion.

NOTES — Fort Scott is not likely to move up into the top eight in Class 4A East play, which would allow the Tigers to host a first-round playoff game. Fort Scott is tied for 14th in the East with Ottawa. The Tigers have a minus-29 point total in the tie-breaker point system while the Cyclones have a minus-53. Baldwin is last at 0-6, minus-77.

Eudora (minus-18), Atchison (minus-22), and Spring Hill (minus-36) are all 2-4, tied for 11th….

Chanute and Bishop Miege have the same record but Miege (plus-60) has the tie-breaker advantage over the Comets (plus-46). Paola (plus-78) and Tonganoxie (plus-74) are both undefeated but don’t play each other this season even though both are members of the Frontier League….

On the West side of Class 4A, McPherson is the lone undefeated team with Butler, Andover Central and Winfield all 5-1. No other team is better than 3-3….
