Cherryvale Defense Blanks CNC Riverton

Cherryvale, KS – 66 yards. That is the total yards given up by the Cherryvale Charger defense to the Riverton Ram offense Friday night in the second week of district play.

“Defense played great. I thought our kids bounced back from last week.” said Cherryvale Chargers head coach Harry Hester.

The ballgame began as a back-and-forth defense battle, with the Charger offense scoring the only points in the 1st quarter on a Trevor Raida 48 yard run. The 2 point conversion would connect and the Chargers jumped out in front 8-0.

After a defensive battle in the 1st quarter, the Cherryvale offense showcased their talents with 22 unanswered points in the 2nd quarter. Quarterback Cade Addis would throw 2 touchdown passes to pad the lead while Kortland Verge scored on the ground with a 16 yard dash. All 3 touchdowns were accompanied by successful 2 point conversions.

Cherryvale led 30-0 at halftime.

In the 3rd quarter the Charger offense and defense would find the endzone.

First, Nick McPherson scored on a 5 yard run. Cade Addis’s pass for the 2 point conversion would fall incomplete. Colton Poole on defense would pick up a fumble on the next Riverton drive for a 40 yard touchdown run. Once again the 2 point conversion would be no good.

With a running clock in the 4th quarter, the final score was recorded 42-0.

“Really proud of our kids tonight. With a win Thursday our team can advance to the playoffs for the 11th time in school history.”

Cherryvale’s offense ran 44 plays for 402 yards. Quarterback Cade Addis was 5 of 12 with 165 yards passing and 2 touchdowns. Trevor Raida rushed for 100 yards on 8 attempts and one touchdown. Kortland Verge rushed for 75 yards and one touchdown. Wide receivers Dalton Hestand-Vail and Nick McPherson both hauled in touchdown passes.

Cherryvale improves to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in district play. The Chargers will host Southeast-Cherokee on Thursday, who lost to Galena earlier this evening.

Riverton falls to 1-7 overall and 1-1 in district play and will wrap up the regular season with the short 10 minute drive to Galena, who improved to 2-0 in district play with a win over Southeast.
