District #5  Week 8

Okay ladies and gentlemen , here we go . Its the last week of regular season football here in Kansas. What a ride it has been . Upsets, blowouts , and all kinds of story lines here in www.Sek-sports.com land.  Wherever your favorite team is sitting at in the standings with one game left I think we can all agree on one thing. This game of football is a lot of fun for the players, fans , and students.  Thank you to all the players and coaches for putting all the hard work to give us this kind of entertainment.

In district 5 in class 2A we had three really good games to watch or follow.  At the top there was Douglass scoring 28 straight points to beat Fredonia for the district Championship 42-21.  The Yellow Jackets had a 21-14 point lead at half time .  The Eureka Tornadoes lost a nail biter 27-26 to Belle Plain. Cherryvale found its first win in district play with a 28-6 victory over rival Neodesha .

Douglass  4-0 ; 6-1 overall  84 points  (Champion)

Belle Plain  3-1 ; 4-3 overall  3 points

Fredonia  3-1; 5-2 overall  -2 points

Cherryvale  1-3 ; 3-4 overall  -7 points

Eureka  1-3 ;  2-5 overall  -15 points

Neodesha 0-4 ; 0-7 overall  Eliminated

Douglass Vs. Belle Plain

Douglass will host Belle Plain in the final regular season game .  The Bulldogs have a power running game that will catch you selling out on the attack and slip in a a pass with receivers that will take it to pay dirt after the catch. Belle Plain has won some close games against Cherryvale, Neodesha , and Eureka with a combined winning margin of 8.  They are guaranteed at least the 3 spot and could get into the #2 spot if they win and Fredonia loses to 0-7 Neodesha. Douglass will play to win the game and then just try to stay healthy as they will host the #4 seed from district 6 in the opening round of the playoffs.

Fredonia @ Neodesha

The Yellow Jackets let one slip away a week ago but they need to put that game behind them and focus on taking care of business against a winless Bluestreak team. A win would give them the second seed and a home game in next weeks playoff matchup against the #3 seed from district 6.  Neodesha has been eliminated from playoff contention. They will try to play spoilers this week.

Eureka @ Cherryvale

This is the game of the week in district #5. Pretty simple stuff here. You win and your in . A loss means no playoffs for your team.  The 1 point loss to Belle Plain last week and the 7-0 defeat from Fredonia has the Tornadoes in a must win situation. Cherryvale was able to get on the winning side of things a week ago against Neodesha to keep their playoff hopes alive. This could be a battle of the CADE’s . Both teams quarterbacks are named Cade. Burden for Eureka and Addis for the Chargers. Both of them have good weapons at their disposal . Its going to come down to which team doesn’t beat themselves. Both coach Harry Hester and Jason Nichols have mentioned mistakes their teams have continued to make this season. Well now is the time to correct those mistakes and make big plays to give yourself a playoff game.

My final thoughts before playoffs

Every team that earns a playoff game next week will have an uphill battle on their hands . District #5 drew as tough of a district that you could possibly have in 2A. All four teams that will qualify for district #6 are top 20 teams in the state.  So getting a home game could be huge .  Playing on the road against those teams is going to be a really tough challenge. For the teams that do not qualify for the playoffs , I hope you get something good out of the week 9 game. It could be a really good learning experience for these teams. It is a good opportunity to play against a team with a similar record . It is also good for the young men that will be returning next year to get another game under their belt to try and get better.  Good luck to all the teams !
