Class 2A District #5

Huge week for class 2A district #5

The top two teams in the district will face off in Fredonia this Friday night. Both Fredonia and Douglass are coming in at 3-0 in district play and 5-1 overall. The Bulldogs have 63 points to the Yellow Jackets 19 points. The biggest surprise is probably Belle Plain at 2-1 and 3-3 overall. They will host 1-2 Eureka .  Then there is a rivalry match up between Tri Valley league opponents with Cherryvale duking it out with Neodesha. Its make or break time for the 3 seed all the way down to the 6 seed. Douglass and Fredonia have secured a spot in the playoffs with two weeks left to play. The other four teams still have an opportunity to battle their way in . Even Cherryvale and Neodesha who are win less in the 2018 district play.

Game of the week

Douglass at Fredonia

The Douglass Bulldogs are setting up to have their best season in quite some time. With a win they should be able to wrap up a second district title in as many years. But this year is different than 2017. Last season they came into district  play without a victory and then won 3 straight to make the playoffs. Their lone loss this year came from Garden Plain who is a tough 4-2 team. Running back Zach Dressler has caught the attention of football fans from across the state. With district 5 having to match up with district 6 in the first round of the playoffs a teams best shot and maybe only hope of winning a first round game is to finish first in district 5.  District 6 is loaded with 2A powers (Conway Springs 6-0,Chaparral 6-0, Hutchinson Trinity 5-1, and Garden Plain 4-2).

Fredonia is having a really nice season so far. After winning only three games in 2017 Coach Svaty has the Yellow Jackets rolling right now.  With four wins against Tri Valley league teams and one against Belle Plain last week . Their only loss was to 6-0 Humboldt in week 2. Fredonia has changed its offensive scheme for 2018 to a smash mouth running attack. And it has worked so pretty darn well. Senior running Owen Blandamer has been running the ball well . This game will feature really good running backs by both teams. And with more than likely wet conditions Friday we should get to see plenty of action from both .

This game is going to be close . Its going to come down to which team can make the most plays in the fourth quarter. I will definitely be attending this one. Good luck to both teams .

Eureka 2-4 (1-2 district -14 points) @ Belle Plain 3-3 (2-1 district -3 points)

Belle Plain has won 3 of its last 4 ballgames . Eureka is coming off its first victory since week 1. The Dragons have come up big in tight ballgames in the last two wins with a one point win versus Cherryvale and a double overtime win versus Neodesha two weeks ago. Fredonia was able to edge out a 28-23 victory last week to stop the Dragons 3 game win streak. They have only played in two blowouts in 2018. One was a win against Independent 42-14 and the other was a big loss to Kingman 56-18. So they are used to playing in close games. This game should be no different with so much on the line. The way things are looking a loss this week could make it really tough for them to make the playoffs with a tough match up next week at Douglass.

The Eureka Tornadoes finally put a good game together a week ago against Neodesha. They had to overcome a first half deficit but were able to climb back and walk away with a 36-22 victory. The Tornadoes didn’t make as many mistakes as they had been making in previous games. Eureka’s passing game was able to get going and that could have a lot to do with the play of running back Brennan Lowe. He had 79 yards on just 11 carries. When teams can get the running game going it opens up the passing attack. They desperately need another win this week to keep its playoff hopes alive. The teams below them in the standing play each other and one of them has to win . A win could put them in the #3 spot with a last week game at Cherryvale who has been really struggling this year.

Neodesha 0-6 (0-3 district -36 points) @ Cherryvale 2-4 (0-3 -29 points)

Both of these teams have had issues in 2018. They have had to deal with some key injuries . They both are really young teams. And neither team has been able to stop opposing offenses. The Blue Streaks have had leads in their last two games but just couldn’t hold on . The Cherryvale Chargers have been turning the ball over quite often and haven’t been able to score points in it’s last two contest. This game will be a fun one I believe. Charger quarterback Cade Addis is going to get going in the right direction to help lead his team right along with running back Garrett Novotny who has played really well this year. I am not completely sure who is healthy and who is injured for the Bluestreak squad. I do know when healthy they have some talented players . Blaze Grimes , Randall McKinnis , and John Black can flat out play when they are actually on the field. It has been a tough year for them. But they haven’t given up and that has a lot to say about Coach John Black. And I could be wrong here but I think Swade Scott is one of the top sack leaders in the state.  Neither one of these teams are completely out of actually making the playoffs. But it all starts with this weeks game . The loser would all be eliminated.

Good Luck to all of the teams in this district. Go out and have fun . There is not many games left in this 2018 season .
