Colony Crest, home to the resilient Lancers, is gearing up for a highly anticipated 2023 cross country season. Head Coach Kaitlyn Cummings, with five years of experience at the helm, is leading the team into what promises to be a thrilling journey in the Three Rivers League.
The Lancers had an exceptional run last year, dominating the competition and securing the TRL League Championship, the Regional Championship, and a commendable third place at the State Championship. Individual standouts, including Josie Walter, Peyton Schmidt, and Aubrey Allen, showcased their prowess on the course. Walter achieved an impressive 3rd position at the state, while Schmidt and Allen claimed 14th and 24th places, respectively.
With the dawn of the new season, some changes are on the horizon. The team bids farewell to Kyree Puckett from the girls’ side and Breakin Jones from the boys’ side, leaving behind a legacy to uphold. However, the Lancers are fortunate to welcome back seasoned lettermen such as Aubrey Allen, Peyton Schmidt, and Josie Walter.
Aubrey Allen, recognized for her remarkable 24th position at the state, 7th at regionals, and a strong 5th place at the league, is poised to make her mark once again. Her personal best time of 22:23 is a testament to her dedication and hard work. Peyton Schmidt, a force to be reckoned with, achieved an impressive 14th position at state, 6th at regionals, and an outstanding 2nd at the league, boasting a personal best time of 21:51. Josie Walter, a true Lancer champion, secured a triumphant 3rd place at the state, replicated her success with a 3rd position at regionals, and clinched the league championship. Her personal best time of 19:59.6 highlights her exceptional talent.
In addition to the familiar faces, the Lancers are excited to introduce new team members. Senior Kaylee Allen is set to make her mark on the varsity girls’ team, while juniors Gunner Ellington, Elijah Taylor, and Ryan West are expected to bolster the boys’ team’s strength.
As the new season unfolds, Coach Kaitlyn Cummings expresses her optimism. Reflecting on the team’s achievements in the previous year, she shares her high expectations for the Lancers’ performance. “We are excited to see what this season brings us following an exciting season in 2022. I have high expectations for this year and am hopeful for many achievements this upcoming season,” says Cummings.
Furthermore, Colony Crest’s tradition of excellence extends to college cross country. Alumni Elka Billings and Ursula Billings continue to make their mark at Fort Hays University, underscoring the lasting impact of the Lancer legacy.
With a strong roster of returning talent and promising newcomers, the Colony Crest Lancers Cross Country Team is poised to push their limits and achieve new heights in the 2023 season.
