Cub Defense Smothers Yellow Jackets

The Humboldt Cubs (4-1) traveled to Fredonia (3-2) to play a Tri-Valley league football game inside Pryor field and Gene John stadium . It was a very windy night under the lights . Humboldt had at least 4 starters on the sidelines with some type of injuries this week .  But that would not stop the Cub defense from smothering the Yellow Jackets from the get go .

Neither team could get any offensive production with their first two possessions. On the third possession for Humboldt that started on the Fredonia 25 yard line the Cubs would start to get things going . They would use a mix of runs and passes to march down the field .  Kyler Allen would hit Colin Gillespie with a 17 yard touchdown pass to get on the board .  With the two point conversion successful the Cubs would lead 8-0.  Fredonia was caught off guard with a Cub onside kick try and Humboldt had the ball once again .  Hesston Murrow would come in at quarterback after sitting out the last 2 games because of injury and lead the team to a 14-0 lead after a 8 yard touchdown run to end the first quarter.

Delvin Hendrix for Fredonia had some success throwing the football early on with quick swing passes and short throws.  They had to get the ball out quick because the Cubs defense was breaking through the line all night long.  The Yellow Jackets had very little success running the ball tonight .  Hendrix was 6 for 18 passing in the first half after completing four of his first seven pass attempts .

Senior tailback Jacob Barker would score on a 26 yard scamper in the second quarter to extend the lead for the Cubs 20-0 . The bad news for the visiting team in the first half was 11 penalties .

Fredonia would get the ball to start the second half but went three and out and had to punt . Humboldt’s Kyler Allen would connect on his second touchdown pass with a 31 yard fly pattern to senior Wyatt Seufert to make the score 28-0 .

The defense for the Cubs just wouldn’t the home team get anything going offensively as David Watts and Tucker Hurst were raging towards Hendrix all night long .  He did escape pressure a few times and connected with standout wide receiver Joe Reyes some in the second half .  To make things worse for Fredonia they had the Cubs ready to punt with a fourth and nine but committed an offside penalty to give the Humboldt a fourth and four. Punter Dagen Goodner would heave a 50 yard touchdown pass to Brent Yost on the fake punt .  Humboldt now led 36-0 to end the third period.

Connor Burgess was flying around the field for the Yellow Jacket defense making tackles and stopping big plays from happening all night long.  His efforts paid off late in the game when he was able to score on a long run to put Fredonia on the scoreboard to make it a final score of 36-7 in favor of Humboldt .
