Cubs Bring Back Talented Squad

The 2018 Humboldt Cubs have been preparing for this season since the 0-48 first round playoff loss to Wellsville. That outcome and how it was done left a pretty big sting. They have been working hard in the weight room ever since. Last years team had ten senior leaders that will have to be replaced in 2018. This years team will have 9 seniors. And they are seasoned and very talented. Humboldt has been reclassified to the 2A class this season.

There aren’t very many teams that can say they will have a leader like senior Dagen Goodner. I believe he has been leading this team from a players perspective since he was a sophomore. Goodner will be leading from behind center this season . He has been a fullback for the offense until now. ” I am sure people have thought that I have lost my mind moving him to quarterback with him not having any real experience at the position prior.” Coach Wyrick explained. I am one of them who when I first was told about this move the beginning of July. But I get it now and completely agree with coach. With his leadership and his ability as an all league center fielder for the baseball team I believe coach’s move will end up being a great idea.

The offense has to replace tailback Jacob Barker who left with graduation. Well look out because there is a kid who has been waiting to finally get the opportunity to explode as a top running back in the league. Junior Conor Haviland will have no problem taking over the reigns in this offense. This kid might have more talent than anyone at any classification this part of the state. He is an electric runner who is smooth and a powerful runner at the same time .

The Cubs will return 5 starters on offense for 2018. Some of them will play different positions. Like Tucker Hurst who has started on the offensive line since he was a freshman will move to Tight End. He is big and he can run.  Senior Kyler Allen will make the move from quarterback to wide receiver. Junior Taylor Lassman will move from right tackle to center. Senior Teryn Johnson will play some wide receiver with the option of playing several positions this season.

In 2017 the Black and Orange had a stifling defense. They should be pretty scary again this year and maybe even more so. Tucker Hurst and Joshua Hull will be intimidating to say the least . These two are massive with height and build. Oh and one of the states best linebackers Dagen Goodner leading the defense as well . There are 7 returning players for the defense. 3 of which which were named to the All State team a year ago ( Goodner, Hurst, and Haviland). This next guy doesn’t get the credit he deserves. Thats Senior David Watts. He is a complete beast on the line. Very quick off the line and he is nasty . Every team needs a couple guys like Watts.

Other players expected to make a difference this season are.

Junior Isiah Coronado WR/ CB , Junior Cooper Jaro DB , Senior Caleb Klauman OL/DE .

Games to highlight and to make room on your schedule are week 1 @home Neodesha, week 3 @Home Eureka, and  week 4 @Jayhawk Linn

This could and should be a very special season for this group of young men. Come out and support them. See you under the Friday Night Lights.

My prediction is a 8-0 and will make some noise in the 2A playoffs.
