The Humboldt Cubs hosted the Eureka Tornadoes Friday night . Humboldt scored quick and often. Winning their third game in a row with ease. They finished the night with a 56-6 victory. The Tornadoes fell to 1-2 . Eureka couldn’t put anything together for the most of the ballgame. A lot of bad snaps out of the shotgun formation led to senior quarterback Cade Burden running backwards after the ball.
Humboldt received the opening kickoff and drove right down the field and scored its first touchdown with 10:12 left in the quarter. Dagen Goodner ran it in from 14 yards out and he would also convert the two point conversion to put them up 8-0. The Tornadoes would go 3&out and would be forced to punt to the dangerous Conor Haviland . That would be a mistake as he took it to the house with a 72 yard return touchdown.
With 8:21 still left in the first quarter Humboldt would already be up 14-0. Eureka would find out how good the Cubs defensive front really is on the next possesion. Senior David Watts and Tucker Hurst would antogonize Burden the rest of the contest. Watts would finish 3 tackles , 1 for a loss , an interception, and sack. Hurst would have 5 tackles , all for a loss, 3 sacks, and a forced fumble. You would think with 56 points their were some big offensive numbers put up by the Cubs. Not really the case. They had the ball on Eureka’s side of the field most of the night . 6 different players carried the ball . Haviland would lead the team in rushing yards for the game with 72 and two touchdowns along with his return touchdown. Goodner finished with 53 yards on the ground and 74 in the air. He had 2 touchdowns on the ground and in the air. Jackson Aikens would finish with 49 yards receiving with a 47 yard touchdown reception. Hurst had a 14 yard touchdown reception.
Humboldt put on a defensive clinic the rest of the ballgame only allowing the Tornadoes to score once and that was with 1 minute remaining in the ballgame. The entire second half was with a running clock because of the score. Eureka’s running back sophomore Brennan Lowe was a bright spot for the tornadoes. He ran down hill hard most of the evening. I don’t have any stats for Eureka at this time but he had a good game running the ball.
I spoke with Tornadoes coach Jason Nichols after the game . He stated ” Humboldt is ahead of us in the process of building a program. They are very talented, have very big strong lineman, and a very talented quarterback. ” He went on to say about his squad ” Our kids never quit, so I am proud of that. We have a long ways to go and have to keep working hard. I know the kids will . ”
Both teams will start district play this week. So now is when every game truly matters. Every team wants to win every game but now every team has to win as many games as they can if they want to continue their season in the playoffs.
