Wow! A must win game to get into the Kansas state playoffs on the line. A big upset from a win less team . There was some fun football that took place in district #5 in 2A Friday night.
The Douglass Bulldogs wrapped up the district championship a week ago with a 42-21 victory over the Fredonia Yellow Jackets. But there was still a lot to be accomplished in this district . There was one spot open to get into next weeks Kansas playoffs . And there was seedings to get sorted out .
The win and you’re in game was between the Cherryvale Chargers and Eureka Tornadoes . Both teams have struggled in 2018 with having very young squads. The Chargers would get on the scoreboard first 6-0 after a failed extra point conversion. The Tornadoes would strike back to go on top 7-6 after a seven yard touchdown strike from Cade Burden to Justin Zimmers. Eureka would keep that lead with a play making defense that would force the Chargers to turn the ball over several time throughout the contest . Eureka would end up winning the game 27-12 to earn the final playoff spot in district #5. Cherryvale would drop to 3-5 and will play a consolation game next week against another 2A team that didn’t qualify for the playoffs. I believe it will be a road game with them being in an odd district in an even year. Eureka will travel to #1 ranked team in the state Conway Springs.
Neodesha has dealt with a lot of injuries from key players for the second year in a row. They have struggled but have never given up with trying to get their first victory on the season . The Bluestreaks have played a few close games in district play but kept coming up with the same outcome. Coming into week 8 at 0-7 they would shock southeast Kansas with a 35-20 win over Wilson county and Tri Valley rival Fredonia . Fredonia came in with 5-2 . Their only losses were from 8-0 Humboldt and 7-1 Douglass. What a great win for coach Black’s team . I don’t like seeing teams finish without a win. After losing two straight games Fredonia doesn’t have much time to get things figured out with a tough match up next week against Chaparral 6-2 . The good thing is it will be a home game for the Yellow Jackets.
Douglass took care of business with a 65-14 win over Belle Plain. Douglass will host Garden Plain 5-3 next Friday night in the first round of the playoffs. Belle Plain will travel to Hutchinson Trinity 7-1 next Friday .
Like I have said before , every team from district 5 will have a tough challenge ahead of them with having to play the district 6 teams. The #4 seed in that district has a 5-3 record . Conway Springs and Hutchinson Trininy are 8-0 and 7-1.
Final standings for district #5
Douglass 5-0 105 points
Fredonia 3-2 -17 points
Belle Plain 3-2 -18 points
Eureka 2-3 2 points
