Bulldog’s Zachary Dressler ran like Forrest Gump tonight against the Fredonia Yellow Jackets. He just kept running and running until the final game clock hit zeroes. Dressler ended the night with 275 yards and 3 touchdowns on 24 carries to lead Douglass over Fredonia 42-21 .

It was a much closer game than the final score makes it look. Fredonia had a 21-14 lead at the half. It was a tale of two halfs at Pryor Field & Gene John stadium in this district 5 showdown.

The game started out with Douglass receiving the opening kickoff and 2 of the first three plays the Yellow Jackets defense created negative plays and the last was a strip sack by Nick Hibbard who also recovered to give them great starting position on Bulldogs 27 yard line. But after a couple of plays they too would turn the ball over with an interception by Kolby Caster , who would end up with another one later in the game.

Douglass had a tough time early on in the game with a lot of negative plays with bad snaps and good Yellow Jacket defense led by Hibbard.  Fredonia would go to its bread and butter , smash mouth football. Owen Blandamer , Isaac Jennings, Taron Ward, and Lorenzo Celani would all take their turns running the football.

After 3 first downs Celani would find paydirt with a 14 yard scamper with :09 left in the first quarter. The extra point was good to give Fredonia a 7-0 lead after one quarter of play.

The Yellow Jacket defense again would come through to force a 3 and out to regain possession and force a second punt in a row from the Bulldogs. They would drive 80 yards with three first downs and a 46 yard touchdown by Jennings. Blandamer also had several tough runs on the drive . Now leading 14-0 and the great Yellow Jacket crowd really pumping up the noise with excitement for this tough district match up.

Dressler decided to put the Bulldogs on his back from here on out . First play on the next possession he ran for a 47 yard touchdown to finally get on the scoreboard to cut the lead 14-6 after the two point conversion was no good.

And from here on out Fredonia started unraveling with penalties and turnovers.  They would lose a fumble to one of the best defensive players I have seen this season , Kyle Hurd . Hurd finished the game with 19 tackles. The Yellow Jackets had a big defensive stop but on a huge 4th down sack by Hibbard he was called for a facemask penalty to keep the drive alive. Dressler would have 50 yards rushing on this drive to go with his 1 yard touchdown run to tie the score 14-14 after a successful two point conversion. Fredonia would have one last drive in the half and they would make the most of it . Even after a 50 yard run was brought back because of a holding penalty . They ended up having a third and 15 to go but Jennings would run for 6 yards and then would get a offsides penalty on Douglass to get a manageable fourth and three . Jennings would barely get the first down on a tough run with 2:20 to go. Quarterback John Dutton would throw a 45 yard touchdown pass to sophomore Layne Mayeske to go up 21-14 to end the half.   Blandamer would have 100 yards rushing at halftime with 15 carries.

Douglass coach Sayahnejad made some great defensive adjustments at the half and Fredonia would have trouble moving the ball the rest of the game. And he used Dressler like any great coach would and just fed him the rock time after time with a lot of success.

Caster would catch a 68 yard touchdown pass from Douglass quarterback Kaaden Pichler to take their first lead in the game 22-21. And they would never look back . They would score 28 straight points to take the victory 42-21. That wraps up the district 5 championship with a week to play. The Yellow Jackets finished the night with 3 turnovers and 10 penalties and I believe that was the difference in the ballgame. The Bulldogs are 4-0 with an 81 point lead over second place. Fredonia would drop to the third spot in district with the loss at 3-1 with -2 points .

Fredonia will travel to win less Neodesha next week to try and regain the second spot . That is important because the second seed will get a home playoff game in week 9. Douglass will host Belle Plain 3-1 (3 points) next Friday.
