With the valuable leadership of Head Coach Tonya Trout, the Independence cross country teams are set to deliver some impressive performances on the track. Here’s a sneak peek into what’s in store for both the boys and girls teams this season.

Girls Team Aims High

Last year, the girls’ team made an impressive comeback after the challenges posed by COVID-19 disruptions. They secured a solid third place finish at the SEK league, and star runner Eva Thompson qualified for the state competition for the second time, taking teammate Addison Cope along with her. Eva’s best time last season was 22 minutes and 14.55 seconds in the SEK league. Addison also showcased her prowess with a personal record of 23 minutes and 38.86 seconds at the KSHSAA 4A Regional in Chanute.

Adding to the team’s strength are returning letterwomen Annabelle Francoeur, Michelle Carranco, and Madison Morrow. With such seasoned runners leading the way, the girls’ team is all set to aim for a top-two finish in the SEK league and possibly clinch a state qualification spot.

Boys Team Building Momentum

The boys’ team showed great determination throughout the last season. Standout runners Josh Hogge and Austin Morrow earned individual all-SEK finishes. Josh achieved a remarkable personal record of 18 minutes and 52 seconds at the challenging Rim Rock meet. Austin Morrow wasn’t far behind with his personal best of 19 minutes and 7.02 seconds in the SEK league. Max Sutherland also contributed to the team’s success, clocking an impressive time of 19 minutes and 32.97 seconds in the SEK league.

The team, led by its key returners, including Austin Morrow, Max Sutherland, and Josh Hogge, aims for a top-three finish in the SEK league, with the possibility of even securing the first spot. The boys are determined to harness their potential and challenge their limits this season.

Newcomers to Watch

Keep an eye out for MacKenzie Hurst and Jaxon Dunn, the talented new faces joining the girls’ and boys’ teams, respectively. Their dedication and energy will undoubtedly contribute to the team’s success as they adapt to the competitive cross country environment.

Promising Alumni Success

Notably, the team has received glowing reports about Austin Morrow and Michelle Carranco’s exceptional performance during practice sessions. Their dedication and consistent improvement are sure to inspire the entire team to push their limits and achieve remarkable results.

An Exciting Journey Ahead

With a mixture of experienced athletes and enthusiastic newcomers, the Independence High School cross country teams are on the brink of an eventful and action-packed season. The girls are aiming high for a top-two league finish and a potential state qualification, while the boys are gearing up for a strong performance, with eyes set on a top-three league finish and a possible championship title.
