In the finals of the Coffeyville soccer tournament, the Chanute Blue Comets faced off against the Field Kindley Golden Tornados. Field Kindley won 2-0 behind two goals from Tate Thornburg.

Thornburg popped his first in only seven minutes into the contest. Not too long after, Chanute would see the first of three players come off with injuries. Sophomore Drayton Cleaver had taken a hard ball to the shin during the first matchup against Fort Scott and reaggravated it in the first half of this one. Then at halftime, junior Lawson Collins came off due to residual effects after a head to head collision in the Fort Scott game. Finally, sophomore Stark Wright came off with leg issues not to far into the second half.

“Coffeyville scored two on us but Fort Scott got the assist. You’re not as fresh going two games back to back. I mean, we won’t come back to this, all you’re doing is ramping up your risk of injury a lot. Our second half, we had Drayton out the whole half, we had Lawson out the whole half, we had Stark out almost the whole half, just because they got knicks and banged up. It’s just that one day-two game tournaments are just not a good idea,” Wilcox said, “But, that’s not really an excuse, I mean Coffeyville played two games also. But there were good things to take away, Miguel [Ayuso] played a ton of Varsity minutes and Guernsey got in a bunch and played well. People stepped up for guys that were hurt. We had people who were out of position, Jay [Brown] played in the back. We held our own against a good team, we just have to regroup. We have three games left so let’s just try to win as many as we can.”

In the 56th minute, Thornburg took the ball by himself and weaved through the broken down Chanute defense to score his second and put the Golden Tornadoes up 2-0.
