Fort Scott girls, Girard boys capture 4A regional cross country titles

BURLINGTON —Team championships were earned by the Fort Scott girls and Girard boys in Saturday’s Class 4A Burlington Regional Meet at John Redmond Reservoir Dam.

Fort Scott won the girls’ division with 61 points, just ahead of runner-up Anderson County with 85 and Louisburg 108. The top three teams qualified for state competition.

Also competing from the area were Iola, fourth at 109, Girard, sixth at 142; Chanute, eighth at 176; and Frontenac, 10th at 211.

Members of Fort Scott’s state-qualifying team include Paxsten Eads, regional champion at 20:18.79; Macula McClure, ninth at 21:07.05; Emma Davis, 13th at 21:33.52; Berkley Chavis, 16th at 21:51.31; Mya Stewart, 25th at 22:47.00; and Clairissa Nivens, 37th at 23:11.15.

Individual state qualifers on the girls’ side included Girard’s Rachel Stephan, fourth at 20:29.81; Paola’s Darian Hudgeons, fifth at 20:30.72; Iola’s Elka Billings, sixth at 20:42.87; Frontenac’s Jessica Peterson, seventh at 20:46.11; Prairie View’s Brooke Allen at 20:54.47.

Girard captured the boys’ championship with 74 points, finishing ahead of runner-up Ottawa at 87 and Iola at 118. Those three teams will advance to the state meet.

Other area teams in the boys’ standings included Chanute, fourth at 136; Fort Scott, seventh at 175; Galena, ninth at 193; Baxter Springs, 11th at 234; and Frontenac, 13th at 326.

Individual state qualifiers were regional champion Timothy Smith of Louisburg (16:42.12), Matthew Oglesby of Galena (16:48.10), Garrett Gantt of Baxter Springs (17:12.83), Reno Lemon of Chanute (17:16.07) and Seth Jarvis of Burlington (17:31.92)
