CHANUTE — It was a clean sweep for Fort Scott High School as it captured the boys’ and girls’ team championships at the Southeast Kansas League Cross Country Invitational on Thursday.
The Tiger boys finished the meet with 51 points to distance themselves from runner-up Coffeyville-Field Kindley with 63. Pittsburg took third place with 79, followed by Chanute in fourth at 85, Labette County fifth at 105 and Independence sixth at 128.
Labette County sophomore Alex Meister won the individual championship with a time of 17:18.49 — more than 18 seconds ahead of Pittsburg sophomore Cameron Jefferson in second place at 17:36.84. Senior Brett Baldwin of Parsons finished in third place at 17:40.33.
On the girls’ side, Fort Scott took the top overall spot with 39 points, finishing ahead of Independence in second place at 57. Pittsburg claimed third place with 81, while Chanute was fourth at 92, Labette County fifth at 100 and Parsons sixth at 128.
Macayla McClure, a senior, led the way for Fort Scott as she was the SEK’s individual champion in a time of 19:49.90. The Independence sisters of seniors Renee Trout and Leann Trout finished second and third with times of 19:59.55 and 21:18.81, respectively. Renee Trout had claimed the previous three SEK girls’ championships.
The top 10 boys and girls individuals were named All-Southeast Kansas League. Individuals that placed 11th through 20th in both varsity races earned All-SEK Honorable Mention.
