Fredonia Rallies Late, Win in Double OT

Leon, KS – “Snatching victory from the teeth of defeat” is how Fredonia High School football head coach Marc Svaty described his teams win Friday night against Tri-Valley League opponent Leon-Bluestem.

The Fredonia Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early 2 possession lead in the 1st half only to see it evaporate in to a 2 possession deficit in the 2nd half. However, with the game on the line in the 4th quarter, the Fredonia Yellow Jacket offense clicked when it mattered most.

“I really felt like our offensive line did a great job blocking tonight. Their blocks allowed runs of 3 to 8 yards for our running backs. I can’t give enough credit to those young men.” said Svaty.

The Yellow Jackets rallied back from 9 points to force overtime in a high scoring, offensive showcase. However, one overtime wasn’t just enough. The game would go to a second overtime and in four plays, the Yellow Jackets would find the endzone for the 55-49 final score.

Fredonia High School Quarterback Devin Hendrix 3 of 16 for 76 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. Wide Receive Joe Reyes caught the lone touchdown reception, a 43 yard pass.

On the ground, Fredonia tallied up 327 yards rushing. They were led by Owen Blandemer who had 176 yards and 2 touchdowns. Hendrix added 69 yards on the ground and 2 rushing touchdowns Joe Reyes was also in the mix with 3 carries and 49 yards rushing.

Jaden Schmidt and Conner Burgess contributed with a 2 point conversion each, something that Coach Svaty said was critical for the team. “Those 2 young men had productive nights for our team.”

The Yellow Jackets improve to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in Tri-Valley League play. They will host the Humboldt Cubs next. Leon-Bluestem falls to 2-3 overall and in Tri-Valley League play. They will host Neodesha to round out league action for the Lion’s season.
