Frontenac Outlasts Baxter Springs At Home

FRONTENAC- Coming into Week 9 and the final week of district play,

The 5-3 Raiders were on the road this week as they faced a 4-4 Baxter Springs squad.

To start the game Baxter would kickoff to Frontenac.

The Raiders would return that kickoff to their own 37 yard line.

It took just one minute and eighteen seconds for FHS to reach pay dirt.

The 2 yard TD run by Peyton Brown was set up by a trick play that featured

a 50 yard pass from Jake Wilbert to Brenden Ishimura to the 2 yard line.

After the score, the PAT was good and the Raiders had an early 7-0 lead.


On the ensuing Baxter Springs drive, the Lions would march into FHS territory

and get as close to the endzone as the 12 yard line.

After several penalties Baxter would end up punting from the FHS 36 yard line.

Frontenac would take over the ball on their own 23 yard line.

On the drive the Raiders would go 3 and out, which would result in a punt.

On the first play of the Lions drive, Cooper Loy would blow past a blocker and force heavy pressure, resulting in an interception by Jake WIlbert on the FHS 16 yard line.


After neither offense could gain control on their next possession,

Baxter would punt the ball deep into FHS territory.

Wilbert would return the punt 52 yards from his own 10 yard line to the 38 of Baxter Springs.

7 plays later, Frontenac would score on a 5 yard TD run by Cooper Loy.

The following PAT was good and the Raiders’ lead increased to 14-0

with 9:46 remaining in the second quarter.


Just two minutes later the Lions would cut into the lead.

With a 24 yard touchdown pass the score moved to 14-7 with 7:45 remaining in the half.

The Raiders would throw an interception just 2 plays into their next possession.

3 plays later Baxter Springs would score on a 11 yard run.

They would make the PAT to tie the game 14-14 with 5:40 remaining in the half.


Frontenac would recover an onside kick attempt by the Lions on their own 32.

Just 2 plays later, Jake Wilbert would break out a 59 yard rushing touchdown.

With a made PAT the Raiders’ took the lead once again 21-14 with 5 minutes on the clock.

The Raiders would score once more and the halftime score would be 28-14.


In the second half, Frontenac would put up 3 more scores.

Alex Johnson would scores on runs of 8 yards and 27 yards.

Jake Wilbert would also score on a 20 yard run in the third quarter.

Baxter would score once in the second half coming on a 5 yard run with 6:15 left in the 4th.

Frontenac would then take 3 straight quarterback kneels to drain the clock and punt the ball back to the Lions.

Baxter Springs would get the ball with 4:05 remaining but would fail to score as the clock eventually hit zeros.


Baxter Springs finishes the year 4-5 overall and will look forward to an improved roster next season.

Frontenac moves to 6-3 on the season and clinches home field advantage in week one of the 4A-II State Playoffs next week. They will host a Girard team that has improved since these two met back in Week one. The Raiders won that match-up 33-6.
