Logan Gaither delivered a punishing 203-yard performance on the ground Friday night, leading the Oxford Wildcats to a hard-fought 38-32 victory over the Flinthills Mustangs.
The contest was a wild, back-and-forth affair from the opening kick, with neither defense finding an answer for explosive rushing attacks. Oxford’s ground-and-pound strategy ultimately tilted the field, tallying 333 rushing yards on 54 carries to control the clock and keep the Mustangs at bay.
The teams traded blows throughout a frenetic first half. Gaither opened the scoring with an 18-yard scamper, followed by a successful two-point conversion pass from Tyson Morris to Kegan Kelly. Flinthills struck back on defense when Brodie McNeil scooped up an Oxford fumble and returned it to the end zone. A Beau Hall conversion run knotted the score at 8-8 after the first frame.
The second quarter turned into an offensive clinic. Gaither added touchdown runs of 10 and 4 yards, while also completing a two-point conversion pass to Kale Moberly and running in another. Flinthills stayed stride-for-stride thanks to a 53-yard breakaway sprint by Hall and a 9-yard touchdown connection from quarterback Tripp Carney to Charles Farris. A two-point pass from Kalen Grunder to Deken Girty sent the teams into the locker room tied 24-24 at halftime.
Oxford seized momentum for good out of the break. The Wildcat defense stiffened, shutting out Flinthills throughout the third quarter while Morris capped a sustained drive with a 4-yard touchdown run. Gaither converted the two-point try to give Oxford a 32-24 advantage heading into the final period.
Kelly extended Oxford’s cushion early in the fourth quarter, dashing 16 yards for a score to make it 38-24.
The Mustangs refused to fold. Ty Finley ignited the Flinthills sideline with a 35-yard touchdown run, and another conversion by Hall trimmed the deficit to six at 38-32. However, the Oxford defense stood tall in the closing minutes, forcing crucial stops and intercepting three Flinthills passes on the night to ice the win.
