Unbeaten Galena wraps up District 7 title, will host Neodesha in bi-district playoff

GALENA — For the first time since 2009, Galena has capped off a perfect regular season as it thumped Riverton 59-7 Thursday night in a Class 3A-District 7 contest.

With that win, the Bulldogs — CNC League champions — closed out the regular season at 9-0 overall. Thursday’s win also gave GHS the District 7 championship.

Galena will host District 8 runner-up Neodesha in a bi-district playoff game on Halloween Night. The Bluestreaks take a 5-4 record into the postseason following a 54-28 victory over Eureka on Thursday.

“Winning a district title is one of our goals every year,” said Bulldog coach Beau Sarwinksi. “We talk about it a lot. For our seniors, it was their fourth district championship in a row, Any time you get a chance to play at home, it’s great. It’s always nice to have your home field, home locker room. The routine at home is always nice. We hope we are playing our best football this time of year. We feel good where our team is at. Hopefully we can continue to play well.”

As for Riverton, it missed out on the postseason after finishing with a 1-8 overall record. The Rams were the District 7 runner-up a year ago behind the Bulldogs.

Galena had control of Thursday’s contest from start to finish. The Bulldogs struck for four first-quarter touchdowns, including a pair of five-yard runs from Kooper Lawson. JC Shelton ran in from 12 yards out, and the special teams got in the act with a 45-yard punt return for a score from Garrett Hall.

From there, GHS blew things wide open with a 33-point second quarter. Riverton avoided the shutout with a fourth-quarter touchdown.

The Bulldogs had 340 total yards while limiting the Rams to just 135. GHS finished with 244 yards on the ground.
