Pittsburg Girls Outlast Chanute in Double OT Thriller

The Blue Comet basketball team opened league play with a 72-70 loss to the Pittsburgh Purple Dragons on Tuesday, December 19.

A 34-22 third quarter advantage for Pittsburgh, was the difference in an overwise interesting ball game.

“I’m really proud of the grit we showed,” Head Coach Dustin Fox said. ” There was never a moment in time where we gave up and we gave ourselves an opportunity to win it.”

Chanute jumped out to a 8-8 lead after 3-pointers by junior Shayla Bogle, and senior Ashlynn Smoot. Pittsburgh scored the next nine points and the two teams went into the second quarter with Chanute up 18-14.

“We still need to take better care of the Basketball and understand time and score,” Fox said.

In the second neither team led by more than 3 points, and they entered halftime 33-22.

Pittsburgh freshman Adelina Tice made a 3-pointer in the third quarter helping the Purple Dragons to a 33-19 lead heading into the fourth.

Chanute ran 51-49 in the final quarter after 3-pointers by freshman Kori Babcock and junior Tori Busse with seconds to play, but Kaydn Matlock scored 2 points for the Purple Dragons, tying with the Comets 51-51.

In addition to the tie, the two teams continued for 3 minutes and tied again. Again they played for 3 more minutes with the Purple Dragons in the lead.

Madisyn Thompson led Chanute with 8, while junior Ashlynn Smoot scored 5, and Busse added 5. Babcock finished with 3 points for the Comets.

Chanute is in action again January 26, at home against Iola. The Mustangs enter ranked 7 in class 1A-D1.
