ABILENE — For the second time in three weeks, Coffeyville-Field Kindley came up with a big road win. This time, the Golden Tornado used two fourth-quarter touchdowns to pull away for a 28-12 victory over Abilene last Friday.
“I was really proud of our effort,” said FKHS coach Darrin Wegner. “Our guys were outstanding defensively. I thought we tackled much better and gave great effort on each side of the ball. It was a long day. To travel that far, be on a bus most of the day, and be focused and ready to go at kickoff was impressive. I was extremely proud of our guys.”
The host Cowboys pulled within three, 15-12, at the end of three quarters following a blocked punt for a touchdown. Yet, Field Kindley was able to kick things in gear in the final 12 minutes of action. Quarterback Aaron Rutherford tossed a 24-yard touchdown pass to Tyrone Johnson to extend the lead. The ‘Nado put the game out of reach with a 22-yard scramble for six by Rutherford to close out the road win.
The Golden Tornado took the opening drive of the game down the field, capped off with a one-yard dive into the end zone by Rutherford. Abilene got on the scoreboard just before halftime, narrowing the gap to one at 7-6.
Field Kindley took a two-possession lead midway through the third quarter on a one-yard run by Seth Bromley. The ‘Nado added the conversion on a run by Bromley for a 15-6 advantage.
FKHS outgained Abilene 250-213 in total yardage. Bromley accounted for 96 of the ‘Nado’s 178 yards rushing.
Field Kindley moved to 2-4 overall with the victory. The Golden Tornado — 1-2 in the Southeast Kansas League — will travel to Chanute this Friday for their SEK finale. The Blue Comets stand at 5-1 overall and 2-0 in league play following last week’s 42-21 victory at Fort Scott.
