COFFEYVILLE — A 4-0 victory over Mulvane Tuesday night has put the Coffeyville-Field Kindley soccer team just one win away from its first-ever trip to the state quarterfinals.
The Golden Tornado advanced to the championship game of Regional 1 in the Class 4-3-2-1A Central/South Central section. This is the fourth straight year Coffeyville has reached the regional final. But it will attempt to make the state quarterfinal round for the first time in program history after unsuccessful attempts each of the past three years.
Up next, the ‘Nado — seeded No. 1 in the entire bracket — will host No. 8 seed Thomas More Prep in a 6 p.m. match Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Coffeyville. TMP (7-7) advanced to the regional title game by way of a 4-3 victory over No. 9 seed Rose Hill in the other semifinal contest on Monday.
“The game was good in terms of getting the job done and getting some players opportunity,” said Coffeyville coach Courey Feerer. “Mulvane played hard. We played the starting 11 for about 25 minutes. We wanted to rest many of our starters if we could, and we found ourselves in a situation where we could do that. We jumped out early and put them under pressure and were able to be successful.”
Tuesday’s win moved the Golden Tornado to 14-2-1 overall on the season — matching the single-season program record of 14 wins established just one year earlier.
This was the second time this season Coffeyville beat Mulvane, including an earlier 10-0 decision at the Arkansas City Bulldog Invitational in early September. Including both matchups against Mulvane, the Golden Tornado have now posted nine defensive shutouts this season.
Coffeyville put Tuesday’s game away early with four first-half goals, starting with Tate Thornburg’s penalty kick in the first minute. The Golden Tornado added goals from Nick Slavin, Jose Villanueva and Alejandro Roman to put the game away. Heath Williams had five saves in goal for the ‘Nado.
