Home Sweet Home: Erie wins 3A sub-state; Devils earn No. 6 seed at State in Emporia

ERIE — After posting 30 wins during the regular season, Erie has advanced to state by claiming the championship of Saturday’s Class 3A Erie Sub-State Tournament.

The Red Devils — the No. 2 overall seed in the bracket — closed out their tournament run by beating top-seeded Riverton in straight sets, 25-13, 25-15. They had advanced all the way to the final by way of a first-round win over No. 7 seed Cherryvale (8-25), 25-22, 25-4, and a semifinal victory over No. 3 seed Neodesha (19-16), 25-9, 25-7.

By claiming the sub-state championship, Erie improved to 33-6 overall and has advanced to the Class 3A State Tournament for the first time since 2002. The Red Devils have earned the No. 6 seed at the state tournament, which runs Oct. 27-28 at White Auditorium in Emporia.

Erie has been placed in Pool II (bottom bracket) with No. 2 seed Nemaha Central (40-3), No. 3 Hesston (37-3) and No. 7 Silver Lake (32-6). Pool I (top bracket) includes No. 1 Thomas More Prep (38-2), No. 4 Cheney (34-5), No. 5 Beloit (34-5) and No. 8 Wellsville (29-11).

Here are the pairings for the Class 3A State Tournament as announced Sunday morning by the Kansas State High School Activities Association:

It was a heartbreaking ending to the season for Riverton. The Rams missed out on a trip to state despite finishing with an overall record of 36-4. The Rams had reached the championship match by way of wins over No. 8 seed Caney Valley (2-29), 25-13, 25-10, as well as No. 4 seed Southeast-Cherokee (20-19), 25-11, 20-25, 25-13.

 

In other quarterfinal action earlier in the day, Southeast-Cherokee beat No. 5 seed Fredonia (13-17) in three sets, 25-23, 21-25, 25-18, while Neodesha also took down No. 6 seed Northeast-Arma (14-20) in three sets, 24-26, 25-20, 25-23.
