Humboldt Blast Jayhawk-Linn

The Humboldt Cubs traveled to Mound City to play Jayhawk-Linn Friday . It was the first road game of the year for the Cubs. This game was no different than the three games they have played at home . Humboldt left Mound City with a perfect 4-0 record after blasting the Jayhawks 73-0.

Humboldt won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. The Jayhawks lined up in their flexbone offense and tried to run right up the gut. Nobody has had any luck trying to accomplish that so far this season. Jayhawk Linn was no different. Senior defensive tackle David Watts made his presence known right away . Watts was the most disruptive defensive player I have ever seen in a high school game. He was hitting the quarterback every single play as he was trying to hand the ball to the running back. After a quick three and out it took only one play to get on the scoreboard with a 13 yard touchdown run by Conor Haviland. The two point conversion was successful as Dagen Goodner would run the keeper in .

The Cubs would kick the ball high and into the middle of the short returners and the ball was recovered by Jackson Aikens for Humboldt. This possession would only take two plays to get into the endzone with Goodner throwing a 12 yard pass to Haviland to put them up 16-0.

The Jayhawks would finally get something to go their way with a third and long pass play that would be caught by Hayden Broyles for a 42 yard gain. That would be their only first down of the first half.

Humboldt would pile on five more touchdowns in the first half to go up 52-0. Senior Tucker Hurst had the entire crowd on its feet in awe with a 31 yard touchdown reception where most young men would of went out of bounds . Not him though. He laid the hardest hit of the night, after crushing three defenders and then rumbled into the endzone. Haviland would have four touchdowns in the first half. Watts and Goodner would add one a piece to get in on the offensive action.

Haviland would add two more touchdowns in the third quarter to end the night with six . One reception and one punt return for scores . The rest were rushing touchdowns. Conor would have an interception to add to his stat sheet. He had 107 yards rushing along with 127 return yards. Goodner finished with 101 yards rushing and 89 yards passing with a touchdown a piece. Cooper Jaro scored a 9 yard touchdown to finish the night.

The mean Cubs defense is why the offensive numbers never look great. Its a good problem to have . Humboldt had 18 tackles for a loss . That is just a crazy stat . Watts and Hurst would have 6 tackles and 3 for a loss a piece. Hurst would have a sack to go along it. Goodner collected 5 tackles with 2 for a loss. Speed Heopker , Reid Barnett, and Caleb Klauman would each have a quarterback sack .

The Jayhawks are not a bad team . This score might say that but that is not the case. They have some talented players and will finish in the top 4 in the 2A district 1. I wouldn’t be surprised if they finished second.

After watching this game I would say to any team Do not gloat or stake a team flag on your opponents midfield logo or you might get beat the next year 73-0.

Jayhawk-Linn 2-2 will host Southeast Cherokee next week to continue district play. Humboldt 4-0 will host 2-2 Erie. Southeast was victorious versus the Northeast Arma squad 27-6. Erie dismantled Riverton 44-19.
