Humboldt Cruises To District Championship

The Humboldt Cubs hosted the Southeast Cherokee Lancers on senior night to finish up district play. The Cubs would dismantle their opponent just like any other Friday night since the opening of the 2018 season. Winning 54-12 to end the regular season with a perfect 8-0 record.  1982 was the last season a Cub football team accomplished such feat with the great Mark Dobbins. But the perfect season isn’t the real goal for this team. Humboldt wants more , much more like several playoff wins . A chance at a state championship.

Southeast would fumble their first snap of the ballgame and would give Humboldt the ball on the Lancers own 24 yard line after senior Dagen Goodner recovered the ball.  It took three offensive plays for the Cubs to get on the score board with a Goodner quarterback keeper from three yards out. The two point conversion was good by Goodner as well to go up 8-0.

After a three and out by the Lancers offense they let everyone know they wanted no part in punting to the dangerous Conor Haviland . Southeast Cherokee would punt out of bounds all night long.  This time it took the Cubs two plays to find the endzone. Haviland would score his 30th touchdown of the season on a 21 yard run to go up 14-0 early in the first quarter . David Watts decided it was his turn to get involved and would intercept a third and long screen pass attempt.  Then Watts would score with a 3 yard dive play that no Lancer wanted any part of . Watts is a big boy who runs like King Kong . Humboldt would lead 22-0 just like that .

Senior Teryn Johnson would intercept his second pass in as many weeks on the next possession to give the ball back to the Cubs once again. Goodner would throw a laser to Haviland to connect on a 42 yard touchdown pass to stretch the lead to 30-0 to end the first quarter.

Humboldt would score three more touchdowns in the second quarter . Goodner would score twice while Haviland would get his 32nd score of the season.  The halftime score would be 54-0. So there would be a running clock and all the younger players would get their opportunity in the second half.

Southeast would score two touchdowns with unsuccessful two point conversions to get their 12 points on the night.

Humboldt will host West Franklin from district #2 next Thursday night. West Franklin will come in with a 4-4 record after taking the #4 spot in their district.
