Humboldt Punches Playoff Ticket

The Humboldt Cubs needed one more victory to secure a birth to this years Kansas class 3A playoffs.  And boy, did they do that. They traveled to Northeast Arma tonight with a short week to prepare for the 0-8 Vikings .

Humboldt scored a lot of points tonight and scored quickly .  Conor Haviland would put the Cubs on top early with a 85 yard kickoff return for a touchdown.  After the defense stopped any attempt Northeast would have at tying the ballgame senior Jacob Barker would return a punt return for a touchdown .  Barker would score two more touchdowns running the football to put them up 25-0 early in the first quarter.  Not finished yet , the defense would get a safety to go up 27-0. Hesston Murrow wanted to get in on the action and would score on a 1 yard quarterback keeper . Humboldt would start the second quarter with a 33-0 lead.

Northeast Arma hasn’t won a varsity football game since the 2015 season.  To say that it has been a rough few years would be an understatement .  The Vikings have only won 3 out of their last 27 contest.  Coach Hobbs and his players have been working to get the program going in the right direction .  They have a really young team this season .  Hopefully they will put in the work this upcoming off season and come out better for 2018.

The Cubs would score 25 more points before halftime . I am sure the younger players were excited knowing they would get to play a whole half of varsity to finish this game being up 58-0 already.

Humboldt would not pour any more points on against Northeast in the second half. With the 58-0 victory the Cubs will have to travel to Wellsville next Tuesday night. Not if Halloween wasn’t scary enough. I will have more to talk about that later this weekend. This will be the orange & blacks second consecutive playoff birth. A 7-2 regular season record is a really nice accomplishment but I have spoken with a few of the players enough that I know their season goals are bigger than that.

Jacob Barker finished the night with 101 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns to go along with a punt return touchdown. Conor Haviland had 64 yards rushing and a 85 yard kickoff return touchdown.  Hesston Murrow threw for 54 yards and had two rushing touchdowns.  Senior Brent Yost scored a touchdown as well.  Sophomore Speed Heopker led the defense with 6 tackles. Caleb Klauman was a force tonight with 4 tackles , 2 for a loss, and a sack . Dagen Goodner recorded 4 tackles to go along with 40 yards receiving.  (All stats are unofficial )

Good luck in the playoffs Cubs !!!
