Humboldt High School’s track and field teams are getting ready to hit the ground running for the 2024 season! Both the girls’ and boys’ teams had strong finishes in their league last year, with the girls placing 3rd and the boys coming in 4th.

The girls’ team did especially well in the postseason, sending their 4×800 meter relay team to State and with four individual boys qualifying in different events. One of those boys, senior javelin thrower Maddox Johnson, even brought home a medal by placing 4th at State!

With 22 years of experience at Humboldt, Head Coach Eric Carlson is excited about the upcoming season. While the team is a little young and inexperienced overall, Coach Carlson is looking to his senior class to provide leadership for the younger runners.

There are several returning athletes to watch out for this year:

  • Mateo Miller: This senior hurdler is aiming for another trip to State after competing there last year.
  • Girls’ 4×800 meter relay team: Three out of the four runners who qualified for State last year are back, including Skylar, Ricklyn, and Anna. Coach Carlson expects them to be even faster this season.
  • Kenisyn Hottenstein and Kinley Tucker: These senior throwers just missed qualifying for State last year and are hungry for another shot.
  • Laney Hull: This returning hurdler and high jumper is expected to do well again this year.

New athletes are also expected to make a big impact this season, including:

  • Girls: Tori Melendez (mid-distance/distance/relays), Josey Ellis (sprints/relays), Mallory Sinclair (mid-distance/relays), Carlie Weilert (throws), and Ella Shomaker (throws/sprints)
  • Boys: Garren Goodner (throws), Brigg Shannon (mid-distance/distance), Carson Peters (throws), Kage Daniels (sprints/mid-distance), and Thatcher Mueller (mid-distance/distance)

With a good mix of returning experience and fresh talent, the Humboldt track and field teams are looking forward to a competitive season!
