Humboldt Will Host Eureka To Tip Off Hoops Season

The Humboldt Cubs and Lady Cubs are coming off terrific seasons from a year ago. The Ladies made an apperance at the state tournament for the first time in what seems like forever. And the boys had a nice regular season run, ending their season with first round sub state loss after being ranked number 1 in class 3A.

Both teams have to fill some important holes after losing important pieces from 2016-2017.  Not an easy thing to do with that kind of talent . I believe both Coach Jones and Taylor will find ways to succeed with this years squads. There is still some talent for both teams and good coaching goes along way .

The season starts with a familiar league foe, the Eureka Tornadoes.  What I remember about the ladies team is they have some height and they move the ball well. This should be a good early test for both teams.

In the boys game I know the Tornadoes like to spread the court and beat off the bounce .  If the defense decides to collapse they can beat you with the three point shot. Kash Parmes will test the Cub defense for sure. Cubs coach Dave Taylor is one of the best if not the best defensive high school coach I have seen .  He preaches defense constantly .  Eureka will have its hands full playing on the road to start this young season.

Offensively the Cubs will need to feed the post often. Tucker Hurst and Lance Daniels should be a year seasoned and ready to lead Humboldt’s post play.  Hurst should be a match up issue for most teams.  I am not sure at this point where they will find most of their scoring as the Cubs leaned heavily on last years seniors Rayce Heopker and Daylon Splane to do most of the scoring. I know Humboldt still has plenty of talented athletes but not sure who is going to put the ball in the hole quite yet.

The Lady Cubs will be lead offensively by juniors Maggie Johnson and Aricah McCall. I also look for Winter Snyder and Rylan Wilhite to have major impacts this season .  Coach Jones has had this team playing good basketball since she has arrived in Humboldt. I have no reason to believe this year will be any different.

The girls game is at 6 o’clock and the boys will follow . I hope to see everyone there. Good Luck Cubs!!!
