Humboldt Will Travel To Wellsville Tuesday

One of the scariest words in a Cub fans vocabulary is the Wellsville Eagles.  I can only think of one victory against those guys in football over the last 30 years. The 2004-2005 team went there and won a 20-14 overtime game. The good news is when you play them its because you have made the playoffs. These two team played last year in the bi-district game and the Eagles handed the Cubs a big 54-6 loss to end their season.

This seasons Humboldt team is a lot different than last years.  They finished the regular season 7-2 and claimed a share of the Tri-Valley league title.  The Cubs offensive and defensive line is bigger and stronger than in years past.  There are true leaders on this squad that will put the team on their back when needed.

Wellsville has won 8 straight games after losing their opener at home to the Burlington Wildcats 40-20. The Eagles won the Pioneer league with a 5-1 record.  They do bring a lot of size and athleticism. #34 A. Geist is a big strong running back that will definitely give any team some troubles.  They are led by #10 Z. Vance at the quarterback position.  He has some size and speed as well.  Vance has 11 rushing and 12 passing touchdowns this season.  Vance has thrown the football for 1,036 yards and rushed for another 603 yards.  Geist has 10 rushing and 3 receiving touchdowns for the Eagles. #80 J. Ebeck lines up at the wide receiver position.  He has 266 yards and 5 touchdowns. Wellsville will line up offensively in a few different sets.  They can line up in the power-I or go with some T wing sets.  They will have to stop the Cubs running game to win this match up.

Humboldt is coming off a 58-0 win over Northeast Arma last Thursday night.  They are 2-2 against teams with a winning record this season.  Wins against Cherryvale and Neodesha and losses versus Caney Valley and Jayhawk-Linn.  The Cubs are perfect on the road so far this year.

They will need to play their best game of the season Tuesday.  Wellsville isn’t the caliber of a team that will let you win with 10 offensive penalties and turnovers inside the red zone.  If senior Jacob Barker and the offensive line play well we should have one heck of a ball game .  Barker has 1,096 yards and 14 rush touchdowns.  And he doesn’t have to do it all alone.  Humboldt has quarterback Hesston Murrow and Conor Haviland who can do some damage with the ball in their hands as well. On passing downs they will probably bring in Kyler Allen to throw the football when needed. He has shown to be able to complete passes as well as use his legs.

The biggest part in this game I think will be how well the defensive line plays.  For the most part of this season they have dominated the line of scrimmage.  Led by junior tackle David Watts and Noah Johnson.  When they are doing their job of creating havoc thats when junior Dagen Goodner and senior Brent Yost fill in the gaps and get their monster hits that could create turnovers.  If junior Tucker Hurst is getting to the quarterback in passing situations , that could be what wins a game like this. The Cubs have been a good tackling team so far and they will have their hands full with Wellsville size.

Sophomore Conor Haviland has had an excellent season on special teams.  His is really dangerous in the open field.  Haviland and Barker have both been good punt returners .  Haviland is one who can take it to the house any time he touches the football.

I believe in this Humboldt team.  I know that the players have put in the work and dedication it takes to win big games.  It will be a cold night of football Tuesday so make sure to bring layers and gloves so you can enjoy what I think will be great playoff football.  See you Cub crazies Tuesday night!!!
