Jayhawk-Linn and Humboldt District Showdown

These same two teams went to the playoffs last year coming out of the same district . The Jayhawks defeated Humboldt 48-14 in 2016. Humboldt’s last win against Jayhawk-Linn came in 2013 with a 55-2 score. Whoever plays the best game this Friday could be your 2017 district 6 champion.

Enough about the past seasons.  This year, the Jayhawks won Three Rivers league going 4-0.  The Cubs have at least a share of the Tri-Valley league title after going 6-1 .  Jayhawk-Linn’s lone loss coming from out of state opponent Drexel , Missouri.  Humboldt’s only loss was to always tough Caney Valley . There is one common opponent between the two schools in Neodesha.  The Jayhawks winning on a last second passing touchdown to win at home 28-26. The Cubs went to Neodesha week 3 winning 18-7 .

Jayhawk-Linn runs a similar offense to Cherryvale and Neodesha with a misdirection running attack. I call it a T-Wing offense .  They also like to throw the ball out of this offense once you start keying in on the running game .  The most dangerous pass catcher would be senior tight end Knemeyer. He stands 6’2″ and weighs about 185 pounds.  He will give the Cubs fits if they don’t play excellent assignment defense.  Maybe Tucker Hurst will shuck him at the line of scrimmage all night to slow him down .  The Jayhawks play a swarm to the ball type defense like the Cubs do .

Humboldt will run the ball right at you until you show that you can stop it .  Then they will use Conor Haviland with sweeps to the outside where he is so dangerous .  Jacob Barker will need to have his best performance this season for the Cubs to come out on top Friday night.  If Humboldt hits just a few big pass plays the offense will probably score a lot of points against the Three Rivers league champions. Humboldt’s defense has been spectacular all season long .  The orange and black have 54 tackles for loss to go along with 13 sacks and 16 turnovers.  They have made it tough on every opponent.  The front line consisting of Noah Johnson, David Watts, Tucker Hurst, and Joshua Hull are just so strong and quick for most offensive lines to deal with for an entire game.

If Humboldt cuts down the costly penalties and play assignment defense I believe they will be the better team .  Now the Cubs haven’t had to play 4 quarters of football since the Caney game so it could be interesting deep into the game .  Jayhawk-Linn wins this game if they get the Cubs to turn the ball over and the Jayhawks can keep the defense off balance with some big pass plays. This game is what this time of year is all about .  I hope to see a great crowd on both sides of the field Friday night .
