Someone had to collect their first victory in Parsons tonight . Iola wanted this victory really bad and came away with an exciting 28-25 win against a former league opponent . Iola is a former member of the Sek league but has moved on to play in the Pioneer league. The Mustangs have been working their tails off in practice every day trying to get better . And it finally paid off .
Iola lead the entire ballgame . But every time they would score then Parsons would fight back and score also . The difference in the game was Pieter Venter kicking his four extra point attempts through the uprights . Parsons had a good young quarter back in #7 Daquan Johnson giving the Mustangs fits with his ability to scramble in the spread offense.
Iola would go in at halftime with a 14-12 lead . Iola just did not give up and decided they weren’t going home with out their first victory . A fantastic running game with 350 plus yards on the night with their three headed attack of Cale Barnhart , Isaac Vink , and Casen Barker would lead the charge . Vink scoring 3 touchdowns and Barnhart having a really good game before he would leave with an injury had 95 yards rushing . Casen had a score also .
With just minutes left it was time for the Mustang defense to get a stop . They did just that intercepting a pass in the endzone . Probably thinking they could just run out the clock Iola fumbled and the Vikings would recover . But with :08 left Iola would stop them again and celebrate a 28-25 victory that was much deserved. Congratulations Mustangs and good luck the rest of the season .
Iola (1-4) will host Osawatomie (1-4) next week and Parsons (0-5) will travel to Chanute (2-3) .
