UDALL — Despite holding a sub-.500 record and the No. 4 seed in the bracket, Leon-Bluestem came out of nowhere to capture the Class 2A Udall Sub-State Tournament championship on Saturday.
The Lions closed out their impressive tournament run by taking down No. 3 seed Moundridge (20-18) in straight sets, 25-21, 25-21, in the final match of the day at Udall High School. Earlier in the day, Bluestem beat Cedar Vale/Dexter 25-11, 25-15 in the quarterfinals before knocking off top-seeded and host Udall (37-2) in the semifinals 25-19, 25-17.
At 19-20 overall, the Lions have the No. 8 seed at the state tournament and were placed in Pool I (top bracket). Also competing in that pool will be No. 1 Goessel (39-0), No. 4 Smith Center (33-8) and No. 5 Meade (32-8).
Pool II (bottom bracket) will include No. 2 Kiowa County (36-3), No. 3 Pittsburg-Colgan (33-5), No. 6 Olathe-Heritage Christian (31-9) and No. 7 Valley Heights (28-10).
Action at the Class 2A State Tournament will begin on Friday, Oct. 27, with pool play and conclude on Saturday, Oct. 28, with bracket play. This year’s tournament will be held at White Auditorium in Emporia.

In other quarterfinal action at the Udall Sub-State Tournament on Saturday, Udall beat No. 8 Elbing-Berean Academy 25-8, 25-10; No. 2 Inman took down No. 7 Oxford 25-10, 25-8; and Moundridge swept No. 6 Central-Burden 25-22, 25-14. Mound ridge took out Inman in three sets, 25-14, 20-25, 25-15, in the semifinal round to land a spot in the championship match.
