Oswego Rallies Past Yates Center in High-Scoring 66-56 Shootout

In an offensive showcase that featured 122 total points and more than 850 yards of total offense, Oswego weathered an early deficit and exploded for 30 points in the third quarter to secure a 66-56 road victory over Yates Center on Friday night.

Behind an unstoppable ground game, the Indians averaged a massive 14.6 yards per carry, piling up 423 rushing yards on just 29 attempts. Demitri Williamson and Deonta Williamson led the charge, answering nearly every score by a resilient Yates Center squad that controlled the tempo and racked up 18 first downs.

Wild First Half Sets the Tone

Yates Center struck first midway through the opening period when Marcus Cummings capped a drive with an 18-yard touchdown run, followed by a Gavin Busteed conversion run to put the Wildcats up 8-0.

Oswego responded immediately with a 25-yard scoring burst from Chance Mills. The Wildcats punched right back through the air when Busteed connected with Benjamin Cook on a 9-yard touchdown strike. Busteed then broke loose on a 55-yard touchdown scamper to extend the Yates Center lead. Oswego closed out the quarter when Deonta Williamson broke free for a 47-yard score, keeping the Indians within striking distance at 20-12.

The fireworks continued into the second quarter. Mills electrified the Oswego sideline with a 43-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, followed by a Demitri Williamson conversion run to tie the game at 20-20.

Yates Center regained momentum behind Busteed and Cummings. Busteed plowed into the end zone on a 2-yard plunge, and Cummings followed with an 8-yard touchdown run with 6:00 left before halftime. Busteed’s second two-point conversion run sent the Wildcats into the locker room holding a 34-20 advantage.

Third-Quarter Explosion Turns the Tide

Oswego came out of the break firing on all cylinders, seizing complete control with a 30-point third quarter.

Deonta Williamson opened the half with a 5-yard touchdown run, and Demitri Williamson added the two-point conversion to trim the deficit. Minutes later, Demitri Williamson broke loose down the sideline for a 71-yard touchdown sprint, followed by a Deonta Williamson conversion to put Oswego in front.

Yates Center answered with a 32-yard touchdown run from Busteed, but the momentum swung right back to Oswego on the very next play from scrimmage. Demitri Williamson found daylight again, ripping off a 65-yard touchdown run to push the Indians ahead 44-40.

The Wildcats refused to go away quietly. Busteed connected with Evan McVey on a 9-yard touchdown pass and ran in the conversion to put Yates Center ahead 48-44 with 2:10 left in the frame. But on the ensuing kickoff, Demitri Williamson struck again, taking the ball 64 yards to the house to give Oswego a 50-48 edge heading into the final frame.

Oswego Slams the Door in the Fourth

Oswego extended its lead early in the fourth quarter when Deonta Williamson punched it in from 1 yard out. He then found Wyatt McClure on a two-point pass to give the Indians a two-possession cushion at 58-48 with 8:42 remaining.

Cummings pulled Yates Center back within two points at 58-56 with a 5-yard touchdown run and another Busteed conversion at the 6:31 mark.

However, Oswego had the final word. With 4:39 left on the clock, Demitri Williamson capped his monster evening with a 34-yard touchdown burst, and Deonta Williamson added the conversion to seal the 66-56 shootout victory.
