Burlington Wildcats hosted the Prairie View Buffaloes in second week District action in a Pioneer League matchup. The Buffaloes came in averaging nearly 40 points per game in their opening four games of the year.
Burlington slowed the early pace of the game with a grinding ground game giving Prairie View only one possession in the first quarter with one first down and forcing a punt.
After punting back to the Buffalos’, Burlington recovers a mishandled snap and goes 34 yards on 7 play to get their first score on a 24 yard TD pass from Johnson to Brown in the back of the end zone. The conversion pass failed and Burlington took the first lead 6-0 at the 5:18 mark.
Prairie View took the kickoff at the 35 yard line and drove 65 yards on their third possession using 5:15 off the clock to score on a three-yard run with :03 remaining in the half by Justin Scott. A failed EP attempt ended the first half knotted at 6-6.
Prairie View got their second score of the night at the 3:44 mark in the third quarter. Hunter Boone appeared to be stopped in a line wall before popping to the outside and racing down the sideline 47 yards to score the go-ahead TD. A two-point conversion pass puts the Buffaloes up 14-6.
Defensive stands on both sides of the ball sent both teams into the fourth quarter grasping for an advantage. Burlington punted the ball through the end zone and after taking possession on the 20, Prairie View milks the clock for over seven minutes on an 80 yard drive downfield to score with :35 remaining in the game on a three-yard pass from Scott to Grey and a two-point conversion on a run by Klein to seal a 22-6 win to go 2-0 in District play.
Burlington will host Iola next week in their final home contest on Senior Night. The Wildcats finish out District play on the road at Osawatomie and Anderson County the next two weeks.
