The Chanute Blue Comets’ soccer hosted the Pittsburg Purple Dragons on Tuesday. Pitt took the 4-0 win behind a couple of goals from Senior Christian Luna. Chanute saw Freshman Gregory Lopez continue to improve.
“Lopez was one game long positive and he’s getting to where it’s harder and harder to keep him off of the field. So him getting better each game is probably our biggest positive today.” Chanute’s head coach Adam Wilcox said.
This game was a real tale of two halves. Throughout the first half, both teams were fighting defiantly to keep the game competitive. Chanute seemed to have resolved some of the issues they’ve seen with spacing and throw-ins in this game.
When the second half kicked off something sparked in Pittsburg and something fizzled out in Chanute for the first thirteen minutes of the half. The Purple Dragons scored four goals in those thirteen minutes including, two from Luna and two from Senior Carlos Salas.
“First half wasn’t a bad half. The first half was not a great half, but it was good,” Wilcox said “We pressured their back, we won balls more or less in the middle, and then at the end of the game it got better we just played really poorly for fifteen minutes. That’s all it takes for a good team to jump on us.”
In the 74th minute of the game, there was a collision down by the Purple Dragons’ goal between Chanute’s Jacob Adams and Pitt’s Juan Hernandez. After the play, Hernandez got up and tried to start an altercation with Adams. Both players received a yellow card and were sent to their respective benches.
