MORAN — For a second straight week, Sedan made quick work of the opposition. The Blue Devils shut down Marmaton Valley 48-0 last Friday in the final game prior to district play.
The contest ended at halftime due to the eight-man mercy rule.
“I was a little nervous going into this game,” said SHS coach Mick Holt. “The last time we played up there, we took them too lightly and got beat. So I was worried a little bit. I challenged the guys to be focused. We scored two touchdowns in a minute to start the game, so I would say they were focused. Our defense played well. I was pleased with the aggressiveness. I thought our boys played well.”
The Blue Devils, who opened the season with a home loss to St. Paul, have now won consecutive games to improve to 2-1 overall. Sedan will return home on Sept. 27 to take on Oswego in the Eight Man I-District 1 opener at Prather Field. The Indians, who beat Altoona-Midway 48-0 last week, are 3-0 on the season after outscoring their three opponents 162-16. Last season, SHS captured a thrilling 38-34 victory in Oswego en route to the district championship and its first postseason berth since 2009.
Meanwhile, Marmaton Valley remained winless on the season at 0-3 while being outscored 148-0 along the way. The Wildcats will next host Southern Coffey County in the Eight Man II-District 1 opener on Sept. 27. The Titans are also 0-3 this season following a 48-0 home loss to Waverly last week.
Sedan’s defense shut down Marmaton Valley to a net of minus-10 yards of offense, including minus-22 yards rushing.
Offensively, the Blue Devils opened things up early and cruise to the victory. In the opening minute of action, SHS struck for two quick scores — the first on a 39-yard run by Eli Campbell and the other on a 36-yard fumble return by Nile Osburn. That was part of a 34-point opening quarter that also included a fumble recovery in the end zone by Jared Roggow-Harter, an 11-yard run by Tayte Halderman and a 35-yard scamper by Dameion Hatten.
SHS tacked on two more scores before halftime to finish things off. Halderman scored on an eight-yard run, and Campbell put the capper on the Blue Devil victory on a 31-yard touchdown run.
Sedan finished the game with 203 total yards of offense. Campbell had a game-high 94 yards rushing on seven carries, while Halderman finished with 74 yards on 10 rushes.
