Fort Scott (3-1) @ Labette County (3-1)
This is the game that we have been waiting for all season as these two squads were ranked as the #1 and #2 teams in the SEK Preseason Coaches Poll. Both teams come into this match up hoisting a solid 3-1 record with both losses coming to very respectable competition. The Grizzlies lost in week 2 play to a current 4-0 Andale team that is gaining respect all throughout the state as they are on the edge of cracking the top 5 class 4A-1 rankings. Fort Scott’s loss came just one week ago as they dropped a home game against rival Pittsburg, despite having an effective running attack.
Labette County’s defense has been strong up to this point only allowing 45 points over the first 4 games, including two shutouts. (39 of those points were in the loss to Andale). The offense hasn’t been slumping either as they have put up an average of just over 47 points per game as they have leaned on the balanced spread attack between a talented running back in T.J Mayhue, a deep group of pass catchers, and an absolute gunslinger in their signal caller, Easton Dean. I look for Coach Price to look for holes in a strong Fort Scott defense that rarely makes mistakes and try to hit the receivers quick and often outside of the hash marks.
As for the Tigers, it’s a fairly simple game plan. Feed the rock to their all-district tailback Zarek Fewell who is currently averaging just short of 170 yards and 2 touchdowns per game on the ground. Fewell may be the most talented back in the entire region and his combination on speed and lateral quickness, put together with his low center of gravity makes him incredibly hard to bring down at first contact. Call me pre-mature, but this contest is going to decide who wins the overall SEK League title and I can’t wait to see the outcome!
