Shinkle’s Return Gives Neodesha 1-0 Start In District Play

Neodesha, KS – The Wilson County Showdown lived up to it’s name Friday night as the Neodesha Blue Streaks not only hosted their inter-county rival, the Fredonia Yellow Jackets, but also kicked off the start of district play.

Neodesha has been without Michael Shinkle the previous two weeks due to injury and his status remained unclear until later this week. Shinkle would prove to be a critical piece in this game.

The score remained scoreless into the 2nd quarter. There both teams found the endzone, first the Neodesha Blue Streaks scored with 7:43 left in the 2nd quarter. Shortly after the Fredonia offense would get on the board for the only time to tie it up heading in to halftime 7-7.

After half, things tilted in favor of the Blue Streaks as they held Fredonia’s offense to only 12 plays. Neodesha would go on to score 27 unanswered 2nd half points, 14 in the 3rd quarter and 13 in the 4th quarter.

“The kids played very hard tonight. Many of them got banged up and got hurt a little but they played hard until the game was over… Couldn’t be more proud of how they played hard.” said Neodesha head coach John Black.

Neodesha senior Michael Shinkle returned to action for 200 yards rushing and a touchdown. Randall McKinnis added 92 yards to his season stations. Running backs Blaze Grimes added 75 yards, Brian Adams 29 yards, and Dominic Skinner 38 yards en route to the victory.

“Hats off to Neodesha. Their kids played very well and consistenly came up with plays to keep offive drives alive especially in the 2nd half. They were able to control the 2nd half of the football game physically and take time off the clock” said Fredonia head coach Marc Svaty.

Neodesha improves to 4-3 overall, 3-2 in the Tri-Valley League and 1-0 in district. They will travel to Caney Valley Friday night.

Fredonia falls to 3-4 overall, 2-3 in the Tri-Valley League and 0-1 in district. They will travel to Eureka, who lost to Caney Valley, Friday night.
