St Paul Indians fall short of State Title

Newton- The St Paul Indians met the Hoxie Indians in Newton for the 8 Man Div 1 State Championship. The weather was exceptional and the fans were on hand to cheer on their respective teams. Hoxie won the coin toss and elected to receive the kick. Alex Mate kicked off for St Paul, Latham Schwarz took the kick for a small return. Hoxie’s QB Jared Kennedy got things started with a 6yd run. Koby Spielbusch and Anthony Albertini kept the pressure on Kennedy in the backfield. What looked to be a turn over on downs, Hoxie found the 1st down marker and kept moving the ball towards the end zone. At the 7:38 mark, Christopher Cox found pay dirt. The extra point was no good. Handling the kicking duties for Hoxie was Taye Washington. Adam Albertini returned the ball for 10yds. Braven Born lead the St Paul’s offense. Born found Brenden Doherty for a 30yd gain. St Paul looked to be moving ball down field, but a couple of penalties would cause St Paul to punt. Braven Born punted to Wylie Weems, for no gain on the return. Jared Kennedy was flushed out the pocket by Grant Hutcherson and Collin Carlson. Kennedy would be called for an intentional grounding penalty for a loss of down. Hoxie was forced to punt. Troyal Burris punted for Hoxie, Adam Albertini return was for no gain. After a change of possessions for both teams, the 1st quarter would end. St Paul 0 Hoxie 6
Latham Schwarz ran up the middle for multiple plays and found the end zone with 8:23 left in the second quarter. St Paul 0 Hoxie 14
Taye Washington kicked off to Adam Albertini for a 25yd return. St Paul fumbled the football with Taylor Burris recovering for Hoxie. Hoxie would return the favor, as they fumbled deep in their own territory Braven Born recovered for St Paul. Collin Carlson moved the ball up the field for small gains. St Paul took a time out to get the offense on track. Born found Carlson open for a 70 yard TD strike at the 4:53 mark in the second quarter. Born to Doherty for the extra point. St Paul 8 Hoxie 14
Alex Mate kicked off for St Paul, Wylie Weems returned for no gain on the kick. Troyal Burris and Latham Schwarz moved the ball at will, setting up a Jared Kennedy to Taylor Burris TD pass at 4:22 left in the quarter. The extra point was no good. St Paul 8 Hoxie 20
Hoxie kicked off for a touchback. After a 3 and out, Koby Spielbusch punted for St Paul. The kick shanked off of his foot. Hoxie started on their own 42 yard line. The next play would be call for a facemask penalty on St Paul. Again, Hoxie was able to run at St Paul where Latham Schwarz found the end zone with :57 left in the second quarter. Hoxie’s Washington kicked off in the 3rd quarter. After a 3 and out, Joseph Hess punted for St Paul. A bad snap give Hoxie the ball on their own 5 yard line. St Paul’s defense held strong for 3 plays, but Christopher Cox scored with 9:16 left in the third quarter. Kennedy to Luke Schippers for the extra point. St Paul 8 Hoxie 36
Taye Washington kicked a touchback for Hoxie. At the 7:42 mark St Paul’s QB Braven Born would leave the game with a knee injury. Sophomore Adam Albertini stepped up to handle the QB chores for St Paul. St Paul was 33 and out. Joseph Hess punted to Wylie Weems for a 10yd return. Jared Kennedy to Latham Schwarz for a 8 yard pass. Jared Kennedy ran the ball for a 20yd TD at the 7:22 mark. The extra point was no good. St Paul 8 Hoxie 42
Washington kicked off to Adam Albertini for a 10yd gain. St Paul could not get anything on offense going. Koby Spielbusch punted 30yds, Hoxie had no return. St Paul’s defense held strong and forced Hoxie to turn the ball over on downs. St Paul got going on the this series of downs, chipping away at Hoxie’s defense. After some good gains down field, St Paul turned the ball over on downs. This would end the 3rd quarter. St Paul 8 Hoxie 42
Hoxie had St Paul’s defense on the ropes. Troyal Burris, Latham Schwarz and Jared Kennedy started wearing them down. Kennedy found Taylor Burris down field for a 50yd TD pass with 8:56 left in the 4th quarter. The extra point was no good. St Paul 8 Hoxie 48
Taye Washington again kicked off to Adam Albertini for a 25yd run. Just when it looked like St Paul was down and out, Albertini found Brenden Doherty open for a 60yd TD strike with 7:52 remaining in the game. The extra point was no good. St Paul 14 Hoxie 48
Alex Mate kicked a touchback for St Paul on the kick off. Hoxie’s Christopher Cox ran the ball up the middle softening up the St Paul defense. Latham Schwarz used this to run for a 40yd TD with 5:41 remaining. The extra point was no good. St Paul 14 Hoxie 54
Taye Washington kicked off for Hoxie, Adam Albertini returned the ball for 15yds. Albertini had runs for 15 and 6 yards. Albertini found Keaton Kennedy on a 15yd pass play. Albertini got Brenden Doherty open for a 20yd pass play. St Paul received a personal foul for a 15yd loss. St Paul would be picked off by Zach Sherman with 2:17 remaining. Hoxie ran the ball for a 1st down to run out the clock. The game would end St Paul 14 Hoxie 54
Both teams came into today’s contest with 11-1 records. Both were not picked to be in the Championship contest. Both had to prove to the Div 1 teams, they belonged to be there. Throughout the season, both teams fought, scratched and clawed their way into today’s Championship game. Hats off to both teams, for a season well done. This is the first State Championship for Hoxie in their school’s history. After the game St Paul’s Coach Keith Wiatrak, had nothing but praise for both teams. Hoxie was big and strong. Their running game wore down the defensive line. They were a good team and congratulations to Hoxie. Coach Wiatrak said he was proud of his Senior core of players. Their leadership got them though some rough games. Looking back at St Paul’s season joy and tears found Coach Wiatrak. Family, Teamwork and Tradition have been St Paul’s mission. Coach Wiatrak looks forward to building on these for next season. St Paul ends its season 11-2 and 8 Man Div 1 runner-up State Champion.
