Thank you to the following sponsors for supporting our coverage of local student-athletes.
In what should be a noticeable trend, we’re rolling out a new feature that we expect will take some time to grow, but will help us promote the accomplishments of our student-athletes on and off the field.
It is the “SEK-Sports.com Student-Athlete of the Week”.
The criteria:
- Only school athletic directors and coaches are eligible to nominate
- Only active, seasonal sports are eligible
- The nominee’s performance is considered by the SEK-Sports.com staff along with classroom performance as well as other school activities and community standing and involvement.
- Nominations are open on Wednesday morning and closed Sunday at noon
- 1 boy and 1 girl from each league will be named
- If there are no nominations for one or both genders or from a league then no “Student-Athlete of the Week” will be awarded for that week
I would like to mention that due to not getting the nominations form that not all leagues responded in time and it is my error, not the AD’s or coaches, for some leagues not having nominations this week. I apologize to all the fans of leagues who didn’t have someone nominated and hope that we will have this wrinkled out next week.
With that being said, here are the first-ever SEK-Sports.com Student-Athlete’s of the Week.

WELLSVILLE SENIOR LUKE RICHARDS-FOOTBALL
Senior Luke Richards is this week’s SEK-Sports.com Student Athlete of the Week after being nominated by Mike Berg. Coach Berg noted “Luke was everywhere on the defensive side of the ball Friday night. He had 3 interceptions and had his first start at quarterback. 6 of 9 passes for 131 yards and one TD. Luke managed the game very well.”

CHANUTE SENIOR JAY BROWN-SOCCER
Nominated by soccer head coach Adam Wilcox, Brown had a hat trick in last Tuesday’s Blue Comet victory plus an assist. “When the game was in hand he asked to come off to get some bench players minutes.” Coach Wilcox also noted Brown’s commitment to the classroom as well. “He has a 4.0 and often helps others study for classes and the ACT. Aside from being excellent at athletics and in-class academics Jay is also prepping for his Sr year of debate hoping to return to Nationals.”
Girls
INDEPENDENCE JUNIORS TIA GREGORY / KAYDN KING – GIRLS TENNIS
Nominated by Coach Sam Carnes, these two student-athletes had an impressive start to the season with milestones quickly approaching. “They have started the season 8-0 (winning #1 doubles in the Indy Invitational and going undefeated at Parsons) and Kaydn is at 99 Wins, which she will, more than likely hit the 100 wins on the 12th of September.”
