The busiest stretch of the summer sports season is officially putting on the brakes. The Kansas High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) annual summer moratorium week begins Monday, June 29, and will run through Sunday, July 5.

For seven days, high school and middle school sports across Southeast Kansas will completely shut down, giving athletes, coaches, and families a mandatory week off.

Here is a breakdown of what is allowed, what is completely off-limits, and how local sports fans can prepare for the quiet week ahead.

What is Completely Shut Down?

The moratorium is a strict “dead period” designed to prevent burnout and ensure everyone gets a true summer break. During this week, all school-related athletic activities are frozen.

  • No Coach Contact: School coaches—including licensed teachers and hired coaching aides—cannot hold practices, training sessions, weightlifting, conditioning drills, competitions, or team travel.
  • Facilities Closed: All member school athletic facilities, fields, and weight rooms are locked down and closed to school staff and students in grades 7 through 12.
  • Train on their own: Athletes are free to run, lift weights at home or public gyms, and work out independently to stay in shape.
  • Play non-school sports: Students can still participate in recreational or club sports, provided no school coaches are involved and school facilities aren’t being used.
  • Rest and recover: Most importantly, players can take a well-deserved break to let minor injuries heal before the countdown to the fall sports preview and August practices truly begins.
