Tigers suffer season-ending loss in De Soto

After defeating Chanute in the first round of the KSHSAA 4A-I playoffs, Fort Scott advanced to the second round for the first time since 2014. This season, the Tigers would find themselves matched up with the number three (3) ranked team in the state in De Soto. De Soto, sitting at 9-1, had only lost to the defending state champions Bishop Miege coming into this sectional playoff game.

The scoring got going early on Friday night. On the second play of the game Fort Scott quarterback Jesse Jones was picked off by De Soto’s Exavier Jackson. Jackson returned the interception back forty-four (44) for a score. Ethan Rodriguez added the extra-point giving the Wildcats a 7-0 lead. On De Soto’s first possession, quarterback Bryce Mohl went for twenty (20) yards and ran in a second touchdown for his team. Later on in the quarter Mohl fired in a twenty-five (25) yard pass to Trevor Watts for another score. At the end of one the Wildcats led 21-0.

Early in the second Mohl got started right where he left off as he added another passing touchdown to his stats. Connor Strouse hauled in the thirty-five (35) yard pass from Mohl to extend the Wildcats’ lead. Soon thereafter, Mohl found Brayden Brummer in stride for a 68-yard touchdown. After another Rodriguez kick, De Soto then led 35-0 going into the half.

The third quarter only sealed the Wildcats’ victory. Leo Oplotnik ran in score and his teammate Jack Barger hauled in a touchdown pass.

The fourth quarter was more or less clean up time for De Soto as they began to send in their backups.

The Wildcats held on to win 49-13. They improve to 10-1 and will host Bishop Miege (11-0) in the eastern sub-state semifinal game next Friday. Fort Scott’s season will end with a record of 8-3.
