2017 in review: The Chargers had 15 seniors and were a handful for any league opponent. They had one hiccup during league play at Humboldt with a score of 8-22. Cherryvale won their first matchup with Montgomery county rival Caney Valley 22-16 in a back and forth battle. With one loss in district against a very strong Galena squad they would have to travel to Caney for a first round playoff game. Caney would avenge the earlier loss with a 55-22 win that would end the 2017 Chargers season.

Key departures: Rb Trevor Raida ,Wr Ryan Robertson , and many others .

Top returning players : Senior quarterback Cade Addis and Senior WR Garrett Novotny

* League Opponent / # District Game

This team has quarterback Cade Addis ! Any high school team that can bring back a quarterback with talent like his is starting the season on the right foot. With losing 15 players to graduation from last year there will be a lot of young men really getting their first taste of the Friday night lights. The Charger football program has been able to reload talent for quite some time. They might not be the best team in the state this year but they will be just fine . I believe they have one of the best high school coaches in the state of Kansas.

I asked coach Hester about the new classifications and districts .

“The best thing is no more 3 games in 10 days in the playoffs and 6 team districts. The worst is the potential travel. For some reason we are in the west and it seems 2A is the only class not divided geographically East/West as possible. We are 50 miles from the Missouri border and we are in the west while there is a school south of Salina in the East. Also have to explain to the fans that we didn’t drop to 2A but were reclassified 2A.”

I also asked about the Chargers opening the season with rival Caney Valley.

” We love to play someone good early. In the past we have played Commerce,OK, Olpe, and a couple of 4A schools out of the gate. I think it helps with motivation and focus the first 3 weeks in camp. This will be the third time in the last 6 games that we will play Caney so we will be familiar with them. Not to take anything away from Caney as they played well in the playoff game , but for some reason we didn’t play at our best that night. I hope we can use that this year to make sure we perform better game 1.”

Notable games for 2018:

8/31 @ Caney Valley

10/12 vs. Neodesha

Just some thoughts I have about Cherryvale for this season- I have said it 100 times since the first time I had the opportunity to watch quarterback Cade Addis, this kid is special. With that being said I think they will be able to compete and they have a chance at going to the playoffs once again. The district plays to their favor.

Good Luck Chargers !
