West Elk claims regional championship with playoff victory against Udall

HOWARD — For a third straight year, the West Elk Patriots have reached the second round of the playoffs.

William Silvey rushed for 151 yards and three touchdowns to lift the Patriots to a 46-0 shutout victory over Udall in an Eight Man-Division I regional playoff game Friday night at Pat Simmons Stadium.

“We are definitely proud to be back in this position,” said WEHS coach Chris Haag, whose squad had come off its third unbeaten regular season in the past five years. “People don’t understand the amount of time and effort it takes to get yourself in a position like this. I’m just so proud of these boys and what they’ve accomplished so far. Now it’s on to the next game for us.”

With that victory, the Patriots remained unbeaten on the season at 10-0 overall. The 10 victories matches the 2015 team for most wins in a season at West Elk. WEHS has now captured a playoff win in each of the past three seasons — previously beating Marais des Cygnes Valley in 2015 and Oxford a year ago. Prior to this string, the program had never won a postseason game in its history.

West Elk will definitely have its hands full next week as it entertains Burlingame in the sectional round of the playoffs. The Bearcats — also unbeaten on the season at 10-0 — advanced with a 34-24 victory over Victoria in another regional matchup. Kickoff for next Friday’s contest is set for 6 p.m. at Pat Simmons Stadium in Howard.

“Burlingame is definitely going to be the best team we’ve faced so far this season,” Haag said, who has his squad in the postseason for the eighth time in his 17-year tenure at WEHS. “This will obviously be a great test for us. We’ve got to stay focused and disciplined against a quality team like that. The boys are excited and geared up for this game. Hopefully we will play to our potential. If we do, then let the chips fall how they may. It should be a great test for both teams.”

The Patriots got off to a bit of a slow start against Udall. Silvey scored on a two-yard run to give West Elk at 6-0 lead after 12 minutes of action.

WEHS was able to increase its lead before the break. Quarterback Cade Miller found Andrew Hurt on a 25-yard scoring strike. Then after a defensive safety, the Patriots were at it again on a 12-yard TD pass from Miller to Hurt. Silvey added the conversion after that score to give the host team a 24-0 edge at the intermission.

West Elk eventually put the game away in the third quarter. Silvey dove into the end zone from a yard out, and that was followed by a 26-yard scoring scamper from Miler. Silvey then tacked on a 42-yard scramble for six, and when Miller ran in the conversion, the Patriots had closed the game midway through the period by way of the eight-man mercy rule.

Silvey had a big game for WEHS, finishing with 22 carries for 151 yards and three scores. Miller added 10 attempts for 73 yards, while also completing 5-of-12 passes for 79 yards.

WEHS finished the game with a 310-80 advantage in total yardage.

Udall — the District 2 runner-up — closed out its season at 5-5 overall.
