The Iola Lady Mustangs are heading into the 2026 softball season with a new-look roster and a high standard of excellence to maintain. Following the most successful season in program history, the Mustangs are ready to see who will step up to fill the gaps left by a massive graduating class.

Head Coach Chris Weide, entering his 11th year leading the program, is joined by assistants Tre Howard and Beth Wille. Together, they are tasked with rebuilding a squad that set the bar higher than ever before last spring.

2025 Recap: A Historic Run

The 2025 season was one for the record books in Iola. The Mustangs finished with a 19-7 record, the most wins in a single season in program history. They were a force in the Pioneer League, finishing 2nd with a 9-3 conference record.

The season ended in a heart-pounding Regional Final against Burlington. In a game that went into extra innings, the Mustangs eventually fell 8-4. Despite the tough loss, the 19-win season proved that Iola has become a powerhouse in Class 3A.

The Challenge: Replacing Seven Starters

The 2026 season will be a true test of the Mustangs’ depth, as they graduated seven starters from last year’s historic team. With only two returning starters and four returning lettermen, the lineup will feature many new faces in key roles.

Top Returners to Watch:

  • Zoie Hesse (Jr.): One of the most dangerous hitters in the state. Last season, she batted over .529 with 46 hits, 12 home runs, and 49 RBIs. Her power at the plate will be the engine of the Mustangs’ offense.
  • Brooklyn Holloway (Sr.): A veteran defensive anchor, Holloway returns for her third year as the starting Center Fielder. Her speed and experience will be vital for a young outfield.

Newcomers to Watch

Coach Weide is looking for young players to make an immediate impact. One name to keep an eye on is:

  • Haidyn Desmarteau: Expected to step into a significant role as the Mustangs look to solidify their new infield and pitching rotation.

2026 Outlook: Peak at the Right Time

With so many new positions to fill, the Mustangs’ coaching staff is focused on steady improvement. The “rebuilding” tag doesn’t mean the goals have changed; the Mustangs still expect to be a factor in the Pioneer League.

“We have a lot of positions to fill due to graduation,” says Coach Weide. “The team has shown promise and potential. Our goal is to compete every week and peak at regional time.”

If the newcomers can gel with veterans like Hesse and Holloway by May, the Mustangs could be a dangerous out in the postseason once again.
